If you hunt waterfowl on Arkansas WMAs, the AGFC has approved changes that will affect you this season:

- WMA permits are only good for five days for 1 WMA that you choose upon purchase
- You can only buy six WMA permits for the entire season
- WMA permit cost went up about $5

The AGFC specifically said this was to make waterfowl hunting better for their residents.

I might get flamed for this, but I appreciate their honesty and think it's a fair move.

Yep, I respect their effort to help out their residents.

I appreciate their honesty, too. Better than mollycoddling PR crap.

But if they want to piss off non-resident hunters and push them away, this is one way to do it and reduce the money for non-res fees, expenses and rollover revenue from those.

Perhaps everyone should only hunt in their state and nowhere else?

No sir, I'm definitely not to that extreme. But when you have the duck hunting that Arky has, or the deer hunting that IA and KS has, or the fishing that LA has, you protect it and make it a little more difficult for OOS'ers to ruin it for the locals. I don't know how this will effect the NR license sales but I think it's a good move for the residents of Ark.

I don't see how it's gonna matter. Who hunts more than 30 days?

There were 8,252 non-resident WMA permits sold in 2016-2017, or 17% of all non-resident license sales. So the argument is that 8,252 people are ruining public duck hunting in Arkansas. After all there's no way residents would cause trouble...

Does anybody else hear how ridiculous that sounds? Whiners are gonna be whiners. This won't change anything for that group. They'll still be fussing next year because somebody beat them to peepaw's hole and it just had to be an OOSER.

Realistically this won't affect me too much, other than being annoyed by the ridiculousness of it all. That being said, I don't much blame the AGFC so much as the crybabies. This will give them (AGFC) some leverage to tell the whiners to shut up for a little while. This isn't protecting anyone or anything. I'm sure if you did a little more data mining you would see a huge disparity in the number of non-resident WMA hunters vs. resident WMA hunters. Maybe we should put some effort into teaching people not to be jacklegs when they hunt. That would be money well spent.

There are more than you think. I know a lot and know of a lot more who move to Arkansas for duck season.

Seems like a knee jerk reaction after a low water year to me...

Yep. There are big- dollar camps built for the sole purpose of access to WMAs

you are only talking 30-40k acres of consistently flooding public green timber.....doesn't take much to crowd it.

Might want to recheck your numbers........

Arkansas can do what they wish, but they are gonna screw around and cut their own throats when it comes to ooser revenue. States to the north and west have much better hunting anyways. Before I quit, I pretty much bypassed arky the last few years.

Birds are shortstopping further north it seems every year.

Do you remember the talk back in the 90's, the Eastern Shore goose limits were cut back and or seasons closed due to over hunting. They kept telling AR better reign it in or you all will live to regret overly promoting duck hunting.

When we get waves of birds they seem to cruise on down to the gulf or turn and head back further north on the next warming trend.

No one can deny the effects of hunting pressure.
