I want to plant some trees in my yard. I live on two acres and have a power line that crosses my front yard, so my choices are some what limited.
I want a tree that won't mess up my septic lines with the roots. It doesn't have to be a fruit or nut tree, but I'd be fine if it was. Maples are out bc of the root problems.
What would y'all recommend?

You want fast shade, or just trees to have trees?

I'm going to plant some Basswood/Linden trees around the farm and one in my yard this fall. Beautiful trees that provide food for honeybees.

Any tree is gonna mess up your field lines. do you not have room anywhere else?
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

Any tree is gonna mess up your field lines. do you not have room anywhere else? Yeah, but that's the least used part of my yard. Away from everything and doubt anything else will grow there. Poor soil on that side of the house. The other side of my house has my garden, water and power along with a power and telephone pole/lines. Rules that out. Power lines cover my front yard. It would have to be low growing. I have one corner of the back yard I could plant anything I wanted. Not even a big oak would get too big there.

I love trees! About 20 years ago, I planted a Yoshino Cherry tree in my front yard. It has taken years for it to reach any power lines, and we are going to have to top it out some...but it is 20 years old. We planted it just beneath the power lines, however, if you were to give it just a little space, it would not get into the lines. It is a beautiful tree with silvery bark and a pretty green leaf. It blooms beautifully in spring with no weird smells. Honey bees love this tree. Root systems are on top of the ground. http://arbordayforum.com/showthread.php?7787-Yoshino-Cherry-Tree-Root-System

I only know of ornamental trees. Weeping Cherry, Yoshino, Okame, and Kwanzan From what I gather, fruit cherry trees will not grow here because of the winter temperature fluctuations. They have chill requirements. Scientists are currently working on a low chill cherry. Testing these out in California and Florida. In Georgia, there is a man growing Stellas and Nanking and is having some success. Stella is sweet. Nanking is not sweet. He has a blog. http://atlantafruitman.wordpress.com/2009/04

Most varieties of cherry trees require long and cool winters in order to produce enough blossoms in the spring that can turn into fruit. Fruit trees require a period of time called chill time which accumulates throughout cold weather seasons. Chill time begins as soon as the leaves fall off of the tree and extends to the first bloom. Cherry trees require between 600 and 700 hours of chill time to produce ample and healthy blossoms. The ideal temperature range for cherry trees during the winter is between 32 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit. We just don't get enough chill time to grow them.
Be kind to one another and tell the ones you love that you love them often. We never know what tomorrow will bring.

I guess we will just have to visit those trees on a farm in the North.

Check Stark Bros...they have several varieties of cherries that are viable for zone 8, and even one for zone 9. Also, bush cherries like the Hansen should do ok down here. Bush cherries aren't true cherries, but the taste and texture is similar, although the fruit is slightly smaller.

On a side note...the bush cherries are also self-pollinating, so you don't have to have any other pollinators planted with them.
