I'll be finished with school this summer. I'll have an associates in welding and minor in machining. I've been thinking really hard and serious about staying in school and finish taking some basic classes. Then when I finish that I'll transfer to a university to get a bachelors. Thinking it can be a big long term benefit. But it's a decision I'll have to make soon. And if I had to choose today I'd probably stay in school. I'm only 20. If you can continue school, go for it. A B.ull S.hcitt degree doesn't guarantee anything, but it's easier to get while young than old.

I never thought I would advise anyone against furthering their education, but if you are going to be a crack welder for a living, two years of work experience will mean more than a bachelors degree. They don't offer B.A.s in welding, so a degree won't mean anything. Now if you want to go into another field, then a BA or BS can be important. Marketing or Business degrees might help you down the road if you want to own your own business.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

While I understand what jawbone is saying, I've never know anyone that regretted furthering their education. Conversely, I can easily name many that wish they had gone further than they did. A degree will simply open doors. It's up to you what you choose to do with those opportunities. There will not be a goose laying a golden egg behind each door.

A BA likely won't benefit you in the long run. There are LOTS of folks out there with BA's that can't get a job.
With a welding degree and a machinist degree, you can walk into any shop and start at $15 per hour tomorrow. If your good and are willing to work $30 per hour within a few years.
Get some experience for a few years, then learn to work on Machinery. There is a huge demand for that. Those guys make $50-100 per hour on a freelance basis and have more work than they can handle.

Totally disagree with jawbone. Get the degree. My father was a welder and late in his career taught at night school. He interviewed for full time jobs but was always beat out by people that had some sort of degree in douche-baggery or whatever.
When you are older and your bones hurt from laying upside and hanging from your toenails welding for the previous 20 years, you are going to want to do something else. The degree will afford you that opportunity. Also as you gain experience and move up in the working world, how many guys in your profession have a degree to go along with their work experience? It will show that you had your head on straight at an early age. Those are the type of people that I want in charge of things.

Buck a 4 year degree unless your gonna be a doctor or lawyer. Start working now and be smart with your money and you'll retire at 55 instead of paying off student loans until then. I have a BS and MS and it never got me a single job. I was either way too "qualified" educationally or not qualified enough cause of work experience. I've worked in public finance and now construction, neither of which had anything to do with my education nor did the employer care if I had a degree or not. I'm in my job because I have a degree. It didn't matter to them one bit that it was a liberal arts degree & I had a terrible GPA. All they needed to know was if I had that little piece of paper. I'm doing outside sales & excelling at it. We don't know what the future holds in terms of technology. Having options in terms of employment is opened up to Cole if he had a trade+degree. I am in favor of him obtaining a degree, not for the education aspect but more for the options it can open. Yes the value of an undergrad has been watered down I get that but not having one can be limiting.

My dad ran a welding shop in Malvern, AR when I was little. He kept the shop going and went to college after hours. Got his bachelor's in business when I was 10. He sold the welding business and got a job at a college. He eventually got a master's and doctorate too, but he always had welding to fall back on if needed.
