Round ‘bout there

I like Civil War history but am not a diehard buff, so I was surprised today to hear about the post-war Sultana riverboat disaster and how the paddlewheeler had contracted to take prisoners from Andersonville and Cahaba.

Cahaba? Alabama's first capitol had a Civil War prison? I never knew that.

Not a fan of Wiki but this is quick info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahaba_Prison

Yep. Castle Morgan. Named after John Tyler Morgan. Morgan Academy is also named after him. Don't tell the citizens of Selma that though. There is a cemetery just outside of the Capitol that has the headstones of all the union soldiers that died in that prison. Their bodies aren't actually there I don't think, and up until last year when they limbed up the place, there was a car hood sized scrape on one of them headstones.

If any of y'all ain't never been to Cahawba, it is a nice place to visit. They've done a lot of work to it over the last 10 years. Take your fishin pole too.

In the wiki article Clem listed above, there's also a link to the Sultana disaster...quick, interesting read.

Yup, the Sultana is still the worst Maritime disaster in American History. (non-War death toll). I've excavated at Cahawba and the History there is fascinating. I strongly recommend folks visit the site and small but important museum there.

That's the one I linked to about 4 posts up, from CivilWar.org

Summary: The Sultana picked up prisoners in Vicksburg and was overloaded by at least 5 times its carrying capacity. According to the story, due to the downstream current and the struggle to carry such a heavy load, the boilers -- already a problem -- gave out at about Memphis and exploded. Many died onboard in the fire and others in the river trying to swim to shore or from burns.

I used to take my dog to let her roam off of a leash and out of my yard at Cahaba, but I haven't been in years. I know that they have done a lot of work to it since then so I probably need to go sometime soon.

I used to go to the cemetery and look at the dates on the headstones and imagine the stories of the people there. I've tried to find the slave cemetery and had a hard time, but once located most were just unmarked graves.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

The slave cemetery is on the right side of the road going north past the slave mansion. The slave mansion there is probably the largest slave house ever built. It was a way the wealthy people in Cahawba showed their wealth off. They had so much money their slaves lived better than regular white people. It was often used as an advertisement to northerners to convince them that slavery "was not that bad, cause look at how well we take care of them".

Not Civil War, but I drove by this marker the other day and had to look it up. Interesting stuff all over this state

I finally found it ,but it was the spring and everything was grown over and hard to find. I hope they are keeping it up better now with full time employees. Back then it was truly a ghost town. I think some volunteers did work and that was about it except for maybe a county grass cutting crew with Bush Hogs from time to time.

Linda Derry has put a lifetime of work getting the place in order there. Its a shame that more local money doesn't help out.

I vaguely recall reading a book about that.

A lot of local people do what they can to help, but it is never enough. As far as local gov'ts, the county is busy trying to pave roads and figure out how to feed prisoners when the CCW permit money dries up.

If Hollywood was properly sued for exploiting the history Selma to make money...give them a taste of their own medicine...if you get what I am saying.

Its a shame all those movies were made about Selma and none of the local people and community of Selma ever saw a dime of it...

Actually, the movie "Selma" had very little actually filmed in Selma. To be fair to Ophrah, she did donate a large amount of money to local charities and schools. However, I'm not in the demographic to see the benefits.

I'm not talking about one movie (Selma), I'm talking about all of the movies and there are a lot of them. Every movie that ever mentions Selma. They unjustly exploited the tragedy and hardship of the community and made a lot of money off it. Shame on them.

True, about once a month or so, someone is requesting traffic to be stopped for awhile while they film the bridge. A lot of foreign documentaries are made about Selma and the south. I'm sure they paint us in such a positive light you have to wear shades to watch it.
