I'll bet you'd be shocked if you knew how few millennials could change a tire. Seems like most kids these days that aren't country boys don't know how to do much of anything that doesn't involve electronics or video games

Then I'll be the devil's advocate...why didn't their Father, Uncle, Grandfather, neighbor, coach, teacher etc show/teach them?

I understand there needs to be self-motivation but having someone older/wiser show you something makes it a lot less intimidating, even simple things.

But that said a lot of young people myself included turn to the Internet/Youtube on how to learn certain things.

Guy I went to college with got a flat once. Pulled into one of these used tire places and said "I got a flat, I need a new wheel" (didn't know the difference in a wheel and tire, thought the wheel and tire were all one thing that you had to buy as a unit). Well, who are they to argue, they sold him not only a new (used) tire but a wheel too.

It is indeed sad for sure. My son knew how to change a tire and what not but I walked my daughter through it when she got her first car. She didn't like having to take tire off and put spare on and then change back but was glad the old man showed her after she had a flat tire last year. As with our generation, some kids are blessed with know how & want to and others aren't.

because their parents wanted to be their "best friend" and not be a parent and teach em stuff they could actually use.

I teach my ten year old grandson to do anything I have to do, from sharpening a lawn mower blade to changing a tire to shooting a gun to cleaning it. Only a lazy self centered sob won't teach a child how to survive when grown.

My dad made me change my first flat tire on my car myself. Fortunately, it went flat at the house. It took me about three times as long to do it myself with him watching and walking me through what I needed to do as it would have for him to have just done it. I didn't much enjoy it at the time, but I did have a sense of satisfaction in knowing that I "could" do it if I needed to and not have to wait on, or rely on, someone else do it for me.

I taught my son "how" to change one, but I told him never to do it on the side of the hwy. No shame in using that OnStar or roadside assistance I pay for to keep from being run over. He does know how to and does check his air pressure regularly.

Now that I think about it, the new car we just bought him for college doesn't even have a spare.

Because many of them don't have ANY kind of strong male influence in their life to learn from so most common sense and mechanical/physical and mathematical science kind of knowledge has been lost.

You're spot on, so instead of bitching&moaning about millennials being the cause of all the worlds woes step up and show that teenager that is being raised by a single Mother down the street.

I heard a great saying recently along this same line. Not sure whose quote it is but it's pretty accurate.

"Half of the people in this country could be standing next to a cow in the middle of a wheat field and would starve to death."
