Is it to late to put out swarm traps? How much longer will they swarm?

No it's not too late. Here anyway. Prime swarming time is RIGHT NOW so be quick. I caught one swarm in July last year. I had to feed them all summer, but I'll be danged if they didn't make it through the winter.

I don't know where you live so that could vary some.

What did you put in them?

I built a NUC and put 4 wax frames and 1 built out frame from another hive. I ordered viles of queen pharones and put a vile inside each of them with a couple drops of lemon grass oil on the outside. Does this sound like it might work?

The optimal size for a swarm trap is about the same size as a 10 frame deep. I have primarily been using a double stacked nuc, 5 over 5. I put frames in the top and leave the bottom open. I STINK at catching swarms in traps, but talked to the state inspector for our area and I think he told me the problem...

Like you, I've been putting foudation in my traps. He said he uses only old brood comb and frames with starter strips.

The scout bees actually measure the hives to make sure they are big enough and apparently the foundation taking up space is a big deal.

I just started reading the most interesting book on beekeeping I've read. It's called the Honeybee Democracy and it is supposed to be primarily about how to catch swarms. I'm not far enough into it to share any good details.

Heck no it is not too late. I have caught 2 swarms in the last week and got a call to go and try to get a new infestation out of a wall in a house. Unfortunately, the bees got in my sisters house and went down into the basement wall instead of up where it would be easy to take the siding off. Going to try and squirt some BeeGo in the finished sheetrock wall downstairs and get them to pile out and put them in a box. (I will let her deal with the after smell. smile

I'm getting friends to put up swarm boxes as we speak. Will update in a couple of weeks once they all get up.

Here's a video by Seeley on the Honeybee Democracy. Interesting if you want to learn about the details of a swarm / hive of bees.

23:45 minute begins a fairly interesting segment of his talk.

Damn, a bee nerd. I would ask Juan and Diego if they know him, but I would bet they don't.
