Finally got lucky and found a Turkey that thought I was sexier than the hen he came to the party with!! I started out on a property that I have been hunting and hearing a number of gobblers every morning that I have gotten to go. Saturday was much different only heard two gobbles total, one each from birds in opposite directions that sounded three counties away. So I eased to an area I had been hearing birds and set up and cold called for a couple of hours and nothing! Well, I decided to try another property that I had not been on since opening day when I heard a total of zero gobbles, but what the heck I wasn't doing any better where I was, so off I went. Got to the other property about 10:20 and started easing along the logging roads looking for sign and listening. Every so often I would stop and softly yelp and heard nothing, no gobbles, no hen talk nothing. It was getting on about "it's been a long time since breakfast" time so I figured I would ease on to a high point on the logging road where it drops off into a pretty good creek bottom and call, if nothing happens call it quits for the morning and grab some lunch. As I was easing along and got to a spot where a small field was and the road made a 90 degree right turn, so I stopped and made a couple of series of soft yelps and nothing. I looked down the road that turned right and 100 yards or so away I see a turkey fast step into the road! I raised my binoculars and identified it as a hen and she was walking fast my way. When she went down behind a rise I backed up and quickly set up right on the edge of the road just before the turn, got the gun up and was ready. Made another series of soft yeps and waited all of 2 minutes maybe and she pops into view at 40 yards and continues to about 30 yards and starts getting antsy. Well, she eases off into the woods and I figured it was all but over, but I softly yelped again and again nothing! So, while I was pondering what was going to be on the lunch menu I hear pft vroooooomm, pft vroooooomm, pft vroooooomm! I get my cheek down on the stock and he pops out from behind a tree at 40 steps goes out of strut and starts looking, then pft vrooomm, back into strut he goes and a few strut steps forward stick his head back up and he gets introduced to Mr. Browning and General Winchester's Number 5 Cavalry at 11:45 AM! 19 lbs 10 3/8" beard 7/8" spurs Glad it happened when it did, I was about to start a petition for the DNCR to allow shooting turkeys over corn poured out on the ground just because hunting turkeys is just so incredibly hard!! Nah, that would take the hunting and fun out of it!!
"After all, it is not the killing that brings satisfaction; it is the contest of skill and cunning. The true hunter counts his achievement in proportion to the effort involved and the fairness of the sport." Dr. Saxton Pope

Congrats! They'll drive you crazy right up to the point of going way out in left field then that one gobbler just plays the part like it was scripted out and it all starts over!
