I was blessed to get my 5th AL bird this morning; I posted in the LFTTW thread that he was a 2 yr old, but after looking at him he was at least 3 and no telling how old he was.

I had a long ride on the cart before daylight to get back into the area where he was, and sure was glad to hear him gobble with all the wind. He was about 100 yards across our line, but I thought that if he pitched out to our side he would eventually end up in an old log landing on top of a hill where they like to strut. So I actually walked about 100 yds away from the turkey when he gobbled instead of trying set up on the side of a hill closer.

I usually get on the north side of the road when hunting the area, but it seemed silly to not get between the turkey and where I thought he would go. I thought he would either walk the road or come up the nearest hollow, so I set up to watch both. I made 2 series of yelps on a Fatal Attraxion Red and got no response, so I clucked on the trumpet a few times. The turkey had gobbled 5 or 6 times on the roost, but never said a thing after I called.

I just sat tight for about 10 minutes, knowing the only way he could get behind me was to go down the creek to the second bottom and then come in, and of course that's exactly what he did. I heard drumming and knew he was right behind me. Then he gobbled and I had pinpointed exactly, about 30 yards behind me. I had some briars and a little bit of the hill between us, so I slid off the seat and got turned facing him. It wasn't but a few seconds and he appeared over the hill coming right at me. That turkey was at least 300 yds and 2 hills over from me when I called, but he knew exactly where I was. I was fortunate that the briars were there; they allowed me to get the gun on him and shoot him at 15 yards without him spotting me.

I thought for sure he was just a nice 2 yr old when I killed him. He weighed 19-5 and had an average beard, but had only one spur that was about 5/16". After I got him home an examined him, there isn't a bit of amber in the end of his beard. The one spur is real crusty looking; this was an older bird who just never got any decent spurs. I suspect he wanted to be a lover and not a fighter.

However old he was, he earned a ride back in the cart.

I have really enjoyed this season. I haven't heard many turkeys that gobbled good, but all that I killed did gobble some and all but one of them was dead a few minutes after hitting the ground. Its all about finding a bird that is ready.

Good hunting to all!

Nice PCP. Good for you. It wouldn't be the same if they didn't gobble. I read the earlier report on here from some fellow who limited out on birds that never gobbled. I kinda felt sorry for him.

That would be great, but our last attempt at that was such a miserable failure that I'm not sure I wanna do it again. smile

Planning to go to OK and KS. I'd like to make a trip to GA, but the place I used to hunt has cut most of their timber.
