Anybody ever had one to come back alive? Shot one once, he didn't flop much. Picked him up and tossed him over my shoulder and walked out only about a 150 yards to my vehicle. Laid him on the ground at the trunk of my Camry, opened the trunk and put my shotgun in and then looked down at him to admire him a bit more. He was looking back.....his eye blinked! I got my foot on his neck just in time. I got a terrible flogging. Finally laid down on him and cut his throat. Then got bloodied up pretty good! Still grateful he didn't revive over my shoulder OR in my trunk! To this day I ALWAYS check the eyeballs before I relax!

There's an easy cure for that. It doesn't matter how they react when I shoot them - I always go grab them by the neck. Hold like that for about a minute. You can kill one like that if you could run it down and catch it bear handed. Foolproof.

Well it ain a turkey but its funny. When i was bout 8 years old daddy set me on a log to deer hunt doe days were over an he told if its got horns killit, i had an old rem 742 30-06. Well i was hunting maybe 100 yards from the lake and i had heard abunch of shooting and cussin an. I knew it was a bunch of duck hunters an they had 2 black labs with them because they wer runnin 2 does when i saw them, not retrievin ducks. Well i heard them go to shootin an hoopin an hollerin then i heard there boat crank an leave i dont even know if they got their dogs. It got quiet an still an i heard the wings of somethin big, i looked up an it was a dang blue heron sittin in the tree right above me.... But he didnt look right, he wobbled there for a minute an i just went back to huntin an forgot about him. Maybe 5 min wen by an i heard a limb break an the next thing i know that sucker fell out onto the ground covered in blood. I was confused i didnt know what was hapnin this pteradactul dun fell out nearly on my dang head... An he just laid there lifless. I thought them sorry..knowaccount...outlaw duck hunters shot thadatgum crane an kilteem. Daddy had always told me that it was against the law. So i felt obligated to tell somebody more important than myself and i would need proof so i decided to take mr crane with me, now i was just a little feller an this thing was big as i was so i opted to unload my rifle an leave it there. So i started back home with this crane slung over my shoulder much like you would a gobbler. Well bout half way there mr crane caught his 2nd wind i rekin an he just beat the crap out of me. I fell down an dropped him an he had a messed up wing an couldnt fly so i thought heck ill just let him be an go back huntin.. Well he tore out runnin stopped wobbled an fell over... So my mission began again i walked over poked him with a stick.. Yep he gone, i picked him back up an started totin him to tha house. Well i made it nearly there an i had to cross a fence so i pitched him on the otherside an started to climb over. When he landed apparrently it must have jumpstarted his heart because he jumped up an tore out runnin down the black top. I just watched him an like before he fell over dedrn heck. So i walked over this time i put ma head to his chest, yep no heartbego, he ded..time to go. So i picked him up an headed on to the house. Well i got there an throwed him down on the porch an run in the house hollerin for mama an she come runnin downstairs thinkin somethin was wrong. So i proceeded to say lookyherewhut i found in tha wuds mama oneahthem blue pteradactyls thats all over tha place. I believe he got shot by duck hunters. Well she walked over an looked out the door an to her an my surprise that thang was gone... Werdhee go... I run out side an that joker was runnin down the driveway h stopped turned around an ran right back up there past us an close lined hisself on the boat trailer... He didnt get back up after that. Mama whooped me for leavin the woods, then daddy whooped me for leavin my rifle, the bird already whooped me 4 or 5 times just cus he thoght it was funny i rekin. Daddy called the gamewarden an told him the story an he got tickled at me. Stupid bird caused me alot of trouble. If they ever caught the folks who shot it i never heard about it. It aint a turkey but that sucker did play possum. This story is absolutely 100% true, coldnt have made it up if i tried lol

friend of mine grabbed one by the feet...it started flopping like crazy and hung a spur in his net gloves. It had 1 3/8 sharp spurs and cut his hand up pretty good as it spun and flopped. He couldn't get his hand out of the tangled glove.

I have a cousin who always carries pruning shears with him to cut small limbs and stuff. He once had to use them to de-head a turkey that came back alive on him in what he describes as a world class wrestling match.

I don't enjoy hand to hand combat with a turkey. I just shoot him again if he ain't dead. I will shoot again with the turkey loads if there looks like any chance he might be able to get away. If he is obviously broken down but not dead, I use a dove load to finish him.

I always carry bird shot with me in my vest for this reason, and to kill snakes!

Another none Turkey story.

Just after Deer season ended back in the late 70s, Dad I were headed from the farm to the local cafe for breakfast when the car in front of us hit a buck in the highway. It was totally life less laying on the side of the road. My Dad said throw it in the back of the pickup and we will take it to Uncle Sam's family, they need some food. So we threw the buck in the bed of his pickup. We proceeded a few miles down the road and came to a stop sign to make a turn. I turned and look in the pickup bed. The buck was standing up riding like a dog in the back of the truck. It was evidently to smart or scared to jump out. I said let's stop and drop the tailgate and let it out. Dad said "No Way, no telling what it might do". So we were now going about 15 miles per hour and he made a steep cut to the left and threw the buck out of the back of the truck. It flip/twisted a complete 360 out the back of the truck and landed with it legs under it and ran full speed into the woods!

A turkey coming back to life is one thing and buck is a different story.

I know a couple of fellas from Wilcox Co that killed a buck at night and loaded it into the bed of the truck. As they drove thru Camden they noticed everyone was pointing at them. The buck was standing up in the bed of the truck. They eased out of town and finished it off with a 22mag.

A couple of fellas I used to hunt with in Sumpter Co hit a spike one night..out dead. They loaded it into the trunk of the car and headed to camp. Couple of miles before reaching camp the trunk seemed to explode, back seat almost coming into the car. They got to camp, and lifted the trunk a couple of inches and shot the deer with a .22...several times till really dead.

My dad has a non turkey hunting story too.
He was riding down a dirt road one night with a buddy and my mom in the car and they hit an owl. So they put it on the back of the truck. Keep in mind the type of car this is is like a bronco where it is all connected. Well after driving around for a bit my mom looked over to see the owl sitting on the seat next to her just staring at her. Scared the crap out of her so they stopped and let it out. Owls can be pretty creepy when they stare at you but even more so when they are a foot away!

A few years ago my boss at work had left around lunch to go check cameras at a piece of property he had. He also had another piece leased on the side of the highway that turkeys loved to strut in the field on the side of the road. As he passed he saw a bird in the field. He parked and threw a shirt on and hit the woods. Bird was dead in less than 10 minutes. He threw the bird in the back of the truck and drove 20 minutes back to the store. When he pulled in the parking lot, we could see the turkeys head looking up from the truck bed. Needless to say, that was the most excitement we had all week watching him catch that pissed off gobbler.

I shot a turkey in Kansas a few years back further than LBXR's should shoot but it "died" So I walk up to it, look at the beard and spurs and pitch it down and start talking with my buddy. In the meantime I glance at the bird and it's breathing, whole body just up and down in rhythm. So I start to it and it does a back flip and starts flopping like all I had done was hit it with a baseball bat. So I tackle it and take the worst ass whipping I've ever had. I choked it, pinned it to the ground with my foot on it's head and finally grabbed it by the neck and spun it like a helicopter before killing it. When I finally killed it there was nary a feather for 6-8 inches below it's neck. It was the dangdest thing ever. Lesson is a semi knocked out gobbler can and will fight a 240lb man and almost win... And if you have good friends they will sit back, watch and laugh.

I shot once several years ago that I thought was dead. Got home and drug him out to clean and he started flopping again and trying to raise his bloody neck. I quick step on his neck and hard yank ended that but I felt bad he went probably an hour and wasn't dead.

This one just refused to die, took a long shot, knocked him down and up he came trying to fly with one wing, then took off running, dragging the wing through an open area full of young sprouts 6"-3', with my old slow hinny in hot pursuit. At about 80 yards the open area ended and it got real thick. That's where I caught up heaving and belly flopped down on him and literally squashed the air out of him . Pretty good wrestling match ensued and I eventually choked him out. I lay on him and rested before I rolled off, then saw my hand. He got me pretty good, left a scar two years later.
