Got set up on a bird this morning and as soon as I have him a tree yelp he flew to within 30 yards of me and landed in a small gas line. It was still so dark I couldn't see good enough to shoot and I was literally shocked. Our turkeys NEVER fly down this early. The turkey disappeared on me as quick as I got a good look at him. After a couple minutes I find him again on the other side of the gas line and I can only see glimpses. A hen yelps behind me and he gobbled so I'm sitting pretty. I'm between him and his girls. As I'm watching him work his way back into the gas line I catch movement to my left and cut my eyes over to see 2 more longbeards not 30 steps from me in open swamp. They must've been coming to the other gobbler but hadn't gobbled and I never heard them fly down. I cut my eyes back to the original gobbler and he's still got maybe 10 yards to come before he gets back into the open so I decide to shoot one of the newcomers. I look back over at them and when they both get behind a big pine I swing my gun on them but before I got all the way around one pops out and goes alert. I see the second gobbler pop out on the other side of the tree and he's got a rope so I line up on him and fire! The turkey just runs a couple steps and goes airborne. I'm too confused to even snap another shot. 40 yards with Lb #5's should've mutilated that bird. As I jump up I here wings crash up the gas line so I ease out into it and a gobbler comes flying down the gas gas line right over me. I'm still dazed by the bird I shot that magically flew off. I start easing up toward where I heard the commotion and about 120 yards from where I shot him at there lays my bird stone dead in the gas line! I've never found a bird that I shot that flew off but thank the good Lord for today ending like it did. 10 3/4" beard and 1" spurs. How in the world did this sucker even flop? Much less fly away!...

That is wild. Congrats. I've looked for a few that flew off, but never found one dead.

Thanks everyone! Gloves to skin a turkey? A good habit I picked up when I spent a couple hours a day in the skinning shed.

Congrats Hank Heck of a story and I'm glad you got him.
