When I was umpiring college baseball at one of our yearly clinics we had Dr Andrews come and speak. I wish every parent who had a child that plays baseball could have heard his lecture. He said that he sees more damaged elbows from kids who throw way too much. He said that it's ok to teach a kid to throw a curve ball, but would not recommend letting him throw it on a consistent basis, in games or practice till they were at least 16-17 years old. He said 90% of rec league and travel ball coaches over throw pitchers and don't know how to care for their arms after they are taken out of games and the following day. If anyone ever gets the chance to hear him speak, please do so. There is not a more qualified person when it comes to shoulders and elbows.

Playing 8 months a year ruined my arm, or so said my Dr. 20 years later it still hurts to throw a rock. I'm told by the Dr I'm lucky I haven't had surgery yet. Although I'm sure it's coming at some point.

Most of the guys I grew up playing ball with that played years of travel ball never made it to thru the first year of college ball or a year or 2 after being drafted. Tommy John and shoulder surgeries for most of them. My dad refused to let me throw a curve ball until I was in 7-8th grade and I'm thankful for it.
Only exception that I grew up playing with is Josh Donaldson. He is definitely on top of his game He is a great player. I hope the money didn't change him.
A mans got to know his limitations.

I met several of the barons pitchers one time and their advise was to learn how to throw correctly and to never throw a curve until they were getting paid to do it. If you have the goods all you need is a fast ball and change up and control. The big league coaches would teach you the rest.

If your son actually has potential to be a college or past that level pitcher, then you are a fool for letting him pitch in travel ball.
Not saying "you", but the collective you. Colleges are already avoiding travel ball kids for pitchers and it is going to get worse.
I totally disagree with this comment. If you look at most any kid from a D1 college that has been or being recruited will come from Travel Ball, especially pitchers. The level of competition at the High School level does not even compare to the Travel Ball level at the same age groups. ^^^This^^^. Rec ball is so weak now days because of the everyone gets a trophy mentality.

I think one reason his arm was good is that I never saw him pitch. He pitched pretty regular in little league, could sling the hell out of it just had no control. I hated hitting against him. He is still a down to earth guy. Money hasn't changed him too bad. We went down to Tampa and watched him play this past season. He invited several of us over to his house after the game to watch the auburn game. Super happy for him, he deserves it

We traveled from the time I was 12-18yrs old, you are completely nuts if you think College Coaches go to REC parks to look at recruits, H.S. okay MAYBE on occasions. Travel ball carries the Elite competition, recruiters can hit one tournament to watch 15 different teams, and most importantly colleges are playing as well playing the same time as REC/H.S.. I can remember at 18 being at East Cobb with 20 different teams during the summer, playing against the like of McCann, Francouer etc that place had 75 college and professional scouts, We played in the championship game and there was 25 scouts lined against the fence. Went to Nashville to play in a tournament with 20+ teams, it was the same way, we actually took down David Price's team (he didn't pitch but they were still elite). Go watch the Jupiter FL tournament World Wooden Bat classic, teams come in from across the world and there are 100s of scouts there.
AS for pitching if the Travel Coach isn't monitoring the # of pitches being thrown by his kids, pitch by pitch, and week to week, you as a parent need to look for a new team or speak up LOUD. 15 and under shouldn't exceed 50p a week, 15 and older 75p at MOST. As a parent you need to have a set LIMIT of innings per year you think acceptable to pitch, and age plays a factor.
The type of travel you are talking about is far beyond that of USSSA or grand slam. The EC Astros, Dulin Dodgers, Chain, Chet Lemon's juice type teams are far beyond what most kids are ever going to play. The average 8-14u AA travel team isn't much better, if any, than a rec team. Ive watched a lot of travel ball through the years and it is, in my opinion, not very competitive these days Not saying you shouldn't put your kid in travel ball, mine played it his whole life. But with the recent influx of every kid in town playing travel it's just not as competitive as it once was. Although I'm sure it's still the most expensive baseball around.
