Winchester 300gr hollow points do the trick. If you handload there are lots of other options. I use hardcast coated bullets in my handloads and they do some damage.

30-30, 35 Rem, 45-70. Have all three. Never killed one with 30-30. Never seen one hit so hard as I have with 35 Rem and 45-70. 30-30 and 35 will be lighter recoil with factory. If you reload you can get about the same recoil from a 45-70. I am pushing 405 grn bullet 1325 fps and it is stomper. And recoil is very manageable.

What about a Savage 300? It's a lever action and excellent close range gun.

Do you mean a Savage 99 in 300 savage caliber? I've never heard of a model 300 Savage, but that doesn't mean much.

I would love to have that 358 Win Savage 99 listed for $700 at 24hourcampfire.

I remember reading about the 300 Savage years ago. The author said "never underestimate a gent with a 300 Savage. He provably knows something you don't."

Yes, I have a Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage caliber. Keep in mind it was a real popular deer rifle before the 308 Win came around. Great gun regardless.

Good round. 45-70 in something like a Guide Gun = Show Stopper at those ranges.

Best misunderstood and labeled "woods" round ever = .356 or.358 Winchester. Hands down. Bought the same up close but just not as limited with it as you can comfortably shoot a bit further.

Marlin 1895G guide gun. Its my go to gun for thick stuff and hardwood bottoms.

I've owned a 45/70 guide gun, a model 94 30-30 and a 35 Remington. I be shot a .444 a few times. I'd go with the 35 Remington personally. But there is something cool about shooting a 45/70!! I miss mine and wish I never would have sold it!

A 30/30 is one of the best deer guns in the world. I know mine has taken more deer than I can remember. But I'm a big fan of the 45-70 too. Both are good brush guns. Ammo is much cheaper for the 30/30 but other than that, its a toss up. Either one is just as good a killer as the other.

I have killed a lot of deer with my 30-30 Marlin. Killed a coyote at 205 steps one time. 45-70 harder on ears.

One of my favorite guns to shoot was a 4570 that I ported. It now belongs to 300ruger. Last i heard he loves it too. I really couldn't tell a difference in noise level out in the open. The porting really keeps the barrel down and flat for follow up shots or multiple shots (pig hunting) if done right.
