Anyone here ever turkey hunt the Talladega national forest near Maplesville? they call it the Oakmulgee area though that seems to be large and stretch up towards Tuscaloosa. Just curious if anyone does.
and if not, then don't start! haha!

There one 10 times as many people as turkeys I've heard this many times over so I've never set foot in that part.

We do the first week every year. We stay at the primitive campground at South Sandy. Some years there are lots of out of state hunters and some years there aren't. There will also be some hunters camping over around Payne lake. I'll get down there around 10 pm tonight.

Too many people. I grew up hunting that part of the NF but in recent years its become grand Central station.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

I remember going with my dad to visit a man that lived back in the hills there in the early 60s. He had a barn door where he had nailed a bunch of fans, beards, and feet from turkeys he had killed over the years. I don't know if that was one of the few areas of the state where turkeys never disappeared completely, or if he just started killing them soon after they were reintroduced. Anybody know if that area always had turkeys?
This was in the Perry Co part of the forest, so a little further south than some you may be talking about now.

well... too many hunters doesn't sound good. Of course, is there any public land with birds that doesn't have too many? Some of the areas I see mentioned are more in the northwest part... are there tons of hunters in that south west part in the pinetucky-maplesville area?

Ten years ago there were a decent number of hunters there. Now every year there seems to be more and a lot of out of state hunters and those turkeys have seen and heard just about everything available to aid in turkey hunting. One of the best places I have ever seen to call to a goblin turkey and him go silent for hours and sometimes head away from you that I've ever seen. Good luck! Your gonna need it.

I have heard some of the most awful calling down there. One morning I walked back to the truck and drove over to find a guy and get his owl hooter from him and break it. He was Gone when I got over there. Another time when the peacock calls came out this idiot was walking down a road calling with it every 30 foot. He walked back and forth on that road for a hour. This was at a place closer to 219.
