practice practice practice.

I have a bad gag reflex [go ahead, insert jokes here] and it was tough when I first started trying to use one. I sounded like crap because I'd gag before I could make a sound unless I moved it further forward, in which case it still sounded like crap. I've finally gotten accustomed to it so I no longer gag. still don't sound great and now I don't have an excuse.

Trim the tape, but take very small cuts -- otherwise you'll over-cut & won't get the call to seal good on the roof of your mouth... I have to trim the tape on every mouth call I get...

Word of advise dont buy walley world calls. Everyone has their favorite but I recommend custom call makers for better mouth calls.

Try a Hooks call, hand trimming tape is hard to get the same every time.

Amen...I also have a terrible gag reflex, my dental hygienist can tell ya'!!!...you just have to stick with it, and like was said in another post, CAREFULLY trim any sharp corners or edges or un-needed part of the call, excess will depend on your palate

I run a mouth call with a dip in on occasion. I usually try and use a pot call if I've got a dip in. I usually have to replace my mouth call every season though cause dips gets in the latex and stains it and makes it smell pretty bad after a year of use.

That's a good suggestion, too; the way I ensure I trim the same every time is -- I use my previous call as the "template"... Gets it right every single time...

BTW, on the gag reflex thing, I still get it but it's few & far between now.. But, from time to time, I'll hock it up & gag like a sick dog & flick the crap outta the call with my tongue to get it out of my mouth... I figured you're not a) a man and b) a true turkey hunter if you haven't nearly puked on a mouth call LOL

The key to learning how to blow a mouth call is repetitive practice. The first two years I tried to use one I would pick it up a week or two before season and mess with it a little here and there and it always sounded like crap. The year after I made it my mission to make that call sound realistic. I kept one in my vehicle and everywhere I went I would experiment with it and finally it just clicked. I didn't think I would ever figure it out so keep on it and you will get it eventually.

Thats my plan, it sits in the console of my truck right now. I went to youtube and found some videos with lots of turkey calling on them, downloaded the audio to MP3 and make a DVD of them so I have a reference to play when I'm practicing

Primos makes a "sonic dome", that I have found is good with beginners. It keeps it in correct place in top of your mouth. they also make a youth model which is same call but smaller if tape is choking you. no cutting required.

Be sure to take it out when it's hot, or it can/will/may ruin the rubber.

I've found the double-stack calls to be a bit easier to learn on. I was always fond of the Primos Raspy Double Hook. Darn sure takes practice to be proficient.

Good luck!

Practice is the key. Someone that can run them can run them. Tape or not. They feel better and seal better with them fitting your mouth so easier to run. Nothing we can tell you you havent seen online. Just keep on keeping on.

And just keep on keeping on trying to learn to use one with a dip in. You'll get it eventually.
