Irish- is that deck just treated and stained or is it a different kind of wood?
Agree with your mountain statement. Unfortunately I can't convince my family of the same thing.....

Man, I hope you don't hate yourself after the carpenter bees start attacking those cedar shingles. It's a great look, but the bee problem never goes away. Even if you treat the wood, they eventually come back.

Very nice and I agree 100% with the sitting on the back deck statement. Thanks. I like the fact that I can't even see the next closest cabin to ours. I can spend hours just sitting out there and staring.

Even if you treat the wood, they eventually come back. I won't hate myself regardless. The good part is that there are cedar shake houses that are hundreds of years old, and all I really need these to last is about 30-40 years and then they will be someone else's problem. All the cedar shakes are going to be on the lower areas of the house that are easily accessible and even if later on I decide to go with something else it won't be that big of a deal for me. When I was researching types of siding, it seemed like everything from Hardieboard to wood composite all had issues enough to say to myself, "If it all has issues I might as well go with something that I actually like to work with." So cedar it is for better or worse.

Hardieboard is a great product, other than the warrantee claims. I just can't stand to work with the stuff. It takes all the joy out of carpentry. It slings pieces of concrete all in your face, and sounds like fingers on a chalkboard and crumbles and breaks at the least opportune times. Whereas, I love the smell of wood when it gets cut.

Super job Irish, very good looking cabin.. I know you will be glad when it is finished so you can move on to next project, LOL. I still want to swap a LS V8 into a Miata one of these days. 400hp and 2500 pounds sounds like a fun project.

I didn't think carpenter bees would mess with cedar shingles. Too thin. I have a few bluebird houses made out of 5/8ths inch cedar and they havn't bored into them, yet. We thought they were getting us at lake, but now think it was an aggressive woodpecker Did an amazing amount of damage though

Once I bought the wood stove and placed it in the cabin, and then thought about where the rest of the furniture was going to go in the small space, I quickly realized that everything was just too close. To alleviate this problem I came up with the idea to build an alcove for the stove. This will also simplify the routing of the chimney, which now will simply run straight up and out the little alcove roof and bypass the upper roof overhang. So Mrs. Irish and I had to pour some foundations and and get out the tools this weekend... Weather permitting we are taking a 4 day weekend next weekend and should manage to get quite a bit of work done. I had to frame the opening on the inside and carefully measure Pic of the exterior framing. Once we get the roof on it and everything blacked in, I will cut the hole. Of course if you're going to work hard at pretending to be a weekend framing carpenter, you need to so a little of this... I honestly would rather sit on my back deck on the mountain than be on a beach any day. I can't wait to move up here full time. Irish, that view definitely doesn't suck! Enjoy your work.
