Shirley there are a few here...or at least some that stayed in a Holiday Inn last night...
Here's what I want to do:
I want to wire up some small LED lights under my rear bumper, but I want them wired a certain way...I basically want them on a 2-way switch where:
Position A = they automatically come on when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, and
Position B = manually turned on.
The reason being, I want them to always come on when reversing, but I want the option to turn them on even if the vehicle is in Park (like hooking up a trailer or something).
I called Truck Supply & Outfitters in Tuscaloosa a few years ago and they acted like this was simply not possible, so I gave up. But now that I've got a fancy new ride, I'd like to revisit it.
Surely it can't be that difficult.
Thoughts?

Actually a 3-position switch would be even better, where there could be an option to have them totally OFF, but if the ON/Reverse way would be easier, I'd be fine with that.

That's what I thought....Just tap into the reverse light wire for power and then when the switch is flipped, have it hard-wired. I figured it had to be relatively simple. can't figure out why they acted like it was so difficult.

Actually You only need a couple of diodes and a switch. Simple. Actually would be better because it would keep the 12v from feeding back into the circuit for the backup lights. These new vehicles you don't know what that might do. You could do Fuzzy Bunny's way but I'd still put a diode in the wire to the backup lights.

What I would do (instead) is buy 4 LED lights. Connect 2 of them to the reverse switch and put the other 2 on a toggle switch.

I have 2 7" LED lightbars mounted under the bumper of my truck as aux. backup lights. They're wired into the reverse light circuit of the towing harness. My Dad suggested that we add a switch and wire them exactly like GomerPyle said, but I told him that that was a terrible idea, as I'd abuse it first and every chance I got!  My old truck had a pretty bright tractor light from the Co-Op mounted under the back bumper, just on a manual switch. People that tailgated me didn't do it for long.

Thoughts? I`ve had a lightbar sitting on the shelf in my garage for this very reason for over a year. hopefully you can get this figured out and as soon as I find me another truck, you can walk me thru it.

No, the reverse lights only powers the coil on the relay to have power sent to the auxillary back up lights. As stated, likely need to place a diode to keep current from back flowing if you want a anytime on off switch too. I drew a diagram somewhere for this with a on/off/on switch, I'll see if I can find it.

Yall making this too hard. Just put a diode in the wire from the back-up lights and one from the switch pointed at the LEDs. You want the end of the diode with the stripe on it next to the LEDs. Diodes should be rated above the current for the LEDs too. Really you could just get by with the one between the backup lights and the LEDs. Now if you had something with higher current or LEDs that drew more than 4 or 5 amps you would need a relay and a diode. If it was an older vehicle I wouldn't worry about feeding back on the back up lights and not using a diode. But back up lights will be on when the switch is on. I bet it wouldn't be an issue on a new vehicle either but I wouldn't chance it. I wouldn't want my backups on when the LEDs were on either.
