I'd like to share a bourbon with you one of these days. You are giving me way too much credit. I have been very fortunate to meet up with some great friends and drinking buddies who have talked me into getting into a bunch of stuff. Mrs. Irish and I were fairly serious motorcyclist. I've been riding since I was 14 years old when I got my motorcycle license. I've owned just about every bike you can think of. She's had about 7 bikes in the 9 years we've been married, and ironically it was the bikes that led us to building a cabin and the cabin building that led us to sell our bikes and get out of riding. We would ride up in the mountains and think, "Wouldn't it be awesome to have one of those cabins?" Well, we figured out a way to make that happen, and once we did that we realized that all of the pretty days we were spending working on the cabin and not riding so we sold the bikes. Fast forward to the other day and I am surfing on Craigslist and I see these two bikes and realize that some good friends of ours own them. The Triumph is her's and the Honda is my buddy's project bike. She's having some heath problems and they are thinning their fleet, so I called and we work out some details and now they are both in the garage. I bought the Honda for my other buddy who lives in Florida. He is truly an interesting man. Ex-Marine, fought in Vietnam, retired plumber and retired aircraft mechanic, and now spends his time building huge WWI & WWII R.C. planes from scratch and flying them and when he's not doing that he restoring old motorcycles and riding them. He also loves to hunt and shoot. He's been all over the country on a motorcycle and I have had the privilege of being on several of those trips with him. One of the best friends a guy could have. My buddy Dave on the left doing what a couple of old Ex-Marines do... Mrs. Irish's bike on the right and mine on the left on one of our trips a few years ago before we became part time cabin builders and sold them. Bonus points to anyone who can guess where that picture was taken. We were headed out West if that is a clue...

Looks like a clean ole 500 Yeah. It's not bad a tiny bit of work will make it a good runner with a nice patina on it. Those bikes were/are rock solid and the parts availability on them is incredible.

Hollar if you decide you don't want to take on that Triumph. I hated selling my last Triumph. Hopefully this will be a keeper for a while. I may turn it into a Scrambler, but for now I'll start off with all the maintenance stuff, check her out good and give her a good cleaning. The clear coat is pretty much gone on the engine covers, so I'm ordering a gasket set, going to pull them off and start with maybe 400 grit wet sanding after I hit them with aircraft stripper, and work my way up to 2000 grit before I polish them out. Should look good when I finish. Here's a good pic of my last Bonneville, hopefully the new gal will be in this shape soon...

Irish, Does your buddy Dave live in the Trussville area and have an LSU fan for a son in law? If so I've met that man and enjoyed doing so.

Very nice.
I just got rid of my two last ones. An old Ducati monster and a first gen sv650 curvy.
The sv was amazing - properly set up, very few riders can keep up in the twisties.

I had a second gen SV650. Loved that bike, but the seat was perhaps the most uncomfortable seat of any motorcycle I have ever owned. The Bonneville by comparison is a fairly comfortable bike for long distances. My record in one day was from Trussville, AL. to Harrison, AR. Always wanted a Ducati, but all the ones I ever rode had me leaned over way too far. Too much stress on my wrists and lower back for any rides of a decent distance.

Spent several hours Saturday morning going over the bike with a fine tooth comb. When I get a used vehicle the first thing I do is give it a good cleaning to familiarize myself with it and then go over all the maintenance items, tune this tweak that, etc... It took me about 6 hours to do that yesterday, and now she seems to be in tip top shape. Runs like a scalded dog. She's pretty loud with the Bub pipes on her, but she's tuned right. It's a little louder than I'd like. I don't want to be "that guy" in the neighborhood, but I don't want to spend several hundred dollars on new pipes and re-tune it. It simply runs too good right now. I cleaned about 15 years of road grim and grease off the engine. My buddy and his wife were big time riders. This bike has been ridden on the back roads from Birmingham to Vermont and back at least 5 times. They were meticulous about maintenance, but not much on washing. She is from Vermont and one of the most awesome women that I know. She has been fighting stage 4 breast cancer for about 5 years. I feel honored to own and ride it. Now that everything is checked out, the only thing I'm going to do is to take the engine cases off when I do the oil change and wet sand and polish them up. The clear coat has started to come off and they are corroded underneath. I have the gaskets on order. Anyway here she is all cleaned up, tweaked and adjusted.

Second pic was taken at "The Crossroads" where the Devil make make a deal with you. Irish, looks like you were listening to the blues in Clarksdale, MS at Abe's BBQ? That's right! We were on our way out to Hot Springs, Arkansas that day and stopped at Abe's for lunch. It's interesting... Once you get West past somewhere in Mississippi most BBQ joints serve tamales. We really loved McLard's in Hot Springs. On this trip we stayed in the Clark House mansion on the way out West and on the way back. We were the only guests in the whole house it was pretty cool. We went to several juke joints while we were there. If you love the blues, the Juke Joint Festival is an event not to miss . We have been several times and it is a lot of fun, great music and great folks.
