I know alot of people use chain link fence as a drag.Do you guys add weight to it when covering the seed?I have a gate from a dog pen that I was thinking about using. You think that will be heavy enough?

I used a 2x8x8 and attached the fencing to that and let it lay loose behind so that it will drag both high and low spots. It worked great for covering the oats, wheat type seed, then over seeded with the clover.

A rigid gate section will only hit the high spots covering some seed and leaving some seeds uncovered. As far as the weight, if the plot is relatively smooth you really don't need weight.

You need to attach a "drag chain" to the back side of the gate to get the low places. The heavier the chain the better. Attach each end of the chain to the ends of the back side of the "drag" and let the center be dragging about 3 feet behind the center of the drag gate.

If you worked your ground up with a disc that you can change the angle on, take all the angle out but 1 notch. Run the disc over it. It'll just flip a little dirt over your seed. Works great.

Use a drag with a chain(heavy) on rear edge. covering with a disc will cover them too deep in uneven spots and you'll have wasted your money.I had a 4"x4" piece of galvanized angle iron on my front edge. The whole works was 6' wide and 7' long.

Not if you take the angle out of the disc.

Have used chainlink, but a baseball field drag works great

I have a 8' x 8' chain harrow similar to the one in this link. Best product I have ever seen or used to level plots or cover seed. Use a tractor tho, we burned up a new Polaris several years ago covering seed in soft soil.

i just harrow mine in , just don't run the harrow to deep . i've always had better luck like that . just dragging over wheat and oats imo ain't the best way . id rather have them a inch deep than right on the top .

We have one that is similar, but is a 3 point hitch model for a tractor. It works great. CD.

I have been using a 6AWG chain link drag for over 20 years with three tires tired onto the center of the drag. It works great. On large fields we pull it with a truck but on smaller ones a 500 ATV will work fine. We try to level the field best we can with a tractor, seed it then drag it. Our plots are pretty smooth and it is all due to that drag. It is much heavier than your typical chain link fence. I have to special order a minimum of 100ft of chain link fencing whenever we need to build a new one. I have a 2x4 treated piece of wood attached to the front of the drag with eye bolts spaced evenly apart and use a chain with a loop to go over the trailer hitch.

We never drag the smaller seeds like clover, brassica, rape or turnips. As long as they make contact with the dirt you are ok. If you drag them they will get covered too deep.

We use an old cattle gate. The roots want stretch it and it is heavy enough to cover the seed.
