Great post. I ask grandma all the time what's it like to have seen the changes she has since the 30s and who knows where we'll be fifty years from now. Just amazing when you think about it.

Thanks for sharing Geezer. I used to love to listen to my granddads (both coal miners) talk about the good old days. One was born in 1901 and the other in 1907. They had some great stories and I truly wish I had recorded them telling those stories. Fortunately, my wife's grandmother, if she is alive on April 8 of this year, she will turn 103 yrs old. She was born in 1914 and was married by age 14. Love to hear her talk and tell her stories. She is a treasure and still sharp as a tack.

I will tell you'll a little more. I used to hunt on Grandfathers property and all the surrounding land. Back then if someone saw you hunting rabbits, squirrels or quail on their property they would just say Oh that is just Posey's grand boy and hollow you having any luck son? There were no deer back then in the hills they were all in the river swamp but I hunting there also they had black people driving and used there dogs to run deer. Oh my heart would beat a thousand beats a minute when the dogs got close. Killed my first deer at Clements's bend when I was just thirteen years old. Guys I have to leave you now to go to Tuscaloosa to a chiropter might be misspelled but will be thinking of some more stories of the past. I have them Oh one other was riding on the running board of Granddad's old 49 ford pickup. We would hunt rabbits at night man that was living.

Geezer you and my dad would have been the same age. Sounds like you both had the same type of upbringing. Life was hard but simple back then.

I was born in 44 and we were poor but did not know it. I think we did have elect and lights but no bathroom (outhouse) and heat was a fireplace. we had no running water and relied on cisterns for our water supply. Everyone eat at the same table at the same time everyday. I remember being happy with life but now with all the luxuries we have not so much. For all u younger folks I'm sorry you missed that era. I remember when we got a radio, we would all gather around it in the evening and listen to it. I think there were only 1 or 2 stations you catch. I don't remember what they were, I believe one was grand ole opry

Well back in the good old days as they say we did not use bird dogs. We just walked up a covey of quail and began to shoot. Every black family had a garden around their home and you could almost bet your next social security check there was a covey close buy. If we killed several we would share with them and man we would be welcome anytime. Oh there were no turkeys, only rabbits, squirrels, quail, we hunted possum at night. Hey have any of you ever been bird thrashing at night? That was a trip I want to forget. I used to lay in bed at night under a ton of cover and listen to the whippier will ,Chip fell out of the white oak, or Jack married the widow. I heard one of hands on the farm named Lygde Lovell Rollings singing his way back home from courting. I ask him one day Lygde why do you sing walking through the woods at night he said cause I can't hear nutting in dem bushes. Lygde was one of my favorite. He always took care of me and took up for me. He smoked Prince Albert cigarettes rooled his on. He died at the age of 97 I think.
Good night fellows if I am boring you just don't read it. God Bless all of you and God Bless American.

My Mom was born in 34. She's told me she remembers seeing chickens under the house through the cracks in the floor. My Grandma told me about riding back from church rivals during the 20s in a wagon at night in the woods of north Louisiana and how scary the screams of panthers were.

I remember when my grandparents got an indoor bathroom. They heated the house with a potbellied stove burning coal. Not many years ago I smelled burning coal and it brought back many memories. We rode in my Grandfathers wagon carrying cotton to the gin, that was the way he made spending money for the year. They had a milk cow, chickens and two mules. Never drove a vehicle or had a drivers license. He grew corn to feed the animals and had an occasional hog to butcher. They were more than happy when I gave them rabbits or squirrels to eat. Squirrel and dumplings are hard to beat. Drew their water from a well on the front porch, man that water was cold and good. My Grandmother was some more cook, always had egg custards and chocolate pudding to eat. She raised 11 kids so there are a lot of us (38 grandkids). Grandkids could do no wrong even when I accidentally let all the baby chicks out of their box in the dining room to play with them.

Last one for awhile. For my thirteenth birthday my Dad bought me a Fox double barreled four ten. Still have it and it is still as tight as it was new. Wish I had a dollar for every fence it has crossed.

Geezer I sure do enjoy your posts. Reading things like that make me feel like I've briefly traveled back in time. I wouldn't mind having a whole book full of stories from your past.

My Grandfather (Mother's Dad) was born in 1897. He was the first one to be born on American soil. He bought 320 acres outside of Plainview, TX. The only way to get there was by wagon after riding the train to Amarillo. Before he passed, he was able to fly in a jet to Phoenix to visit his oldest daughter. Up until the day he died, he never believed we put a man on the moon. The ability to do so, was just beyond his comprehension.

Since he was widowed and spoke perfect German, he was allowed to use German POW's from the camp outside of Hereford to help with all his farm chores. The Army delivered them in the morning and picked them up in the evening. We received a bunch of sympathy cards from them when he passed. Each one telling us how grateful they were during their time in the US and how nice it was to work on the farm along side my Grandfather.

Well look guys I am just telling of the things I experienced in my child hood. We will stick to the hunting part if it alright with you guys. I remember a friend of mine that wanted to take me coon hunting in the swamps of Clements Bend said he had the best coon dogs in all the state. Well I was new to coon hunting in swamps we caught some in the hills so I said lets go. Man what a mistake. His so called coon dogs hit the water, went to a tree and he said the coon must have taped the tree cause there was not a coon in the tree. I told the good Lord If you get me out of these snake infested waters you will never catch me here again. He did his part and I did mine. You know guys and gals I can search my mind of times go by and just get lost in the past it all belongs to me. I really wish I could somehow instill into each one of you my memories. I know that is impossible but believe me I was there in the GOOD OLD DAYS. I love everyone I just love some more than others.

You are correct. Coon hunting is not for a thinking man. You just have to go after them and not think about what you are stepping in, on or around.

Feel free to tell us stories of past times on any subject that comes to mind. I enjoy them and I'm sure others do to. For many of us, this may be the only way we get to experience some of this stuff. My late grandmother was born in 1910 so she was just hitting her stride when the Great Depression hit. She used to tell stories all the time on how they survived in the Shreveport, LA area in those days. I wish I had recorded her or paid better attention. I will say however, that thanks to her, I bet I was one of the few 10 year old kids in Arizona that could wring (maybe ring?) a chickens neck and didn't mind doing it because it meant Myma's fried chicken was for supper.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
