Feb 4th... My birthday. Never have had the chance to hunt on my bday. But Saturday I did and The Lord blessed me with a nice cull buck that afternoon. Seen about 20-25 does, spikes , and a couple of smaller bucks. But nothin worth shooting. Then around 4:45 he came strolling of about 500 yards away and was headed towards me. But stopped about 325 yards. So I braced up and and adjusted for the shot and let her rip through the cotton field. Made contact and he took off running away from me. Took another running shot somewhere around 400 yards and by some stroke of a birthday miracle he dropped. Not the biggest buck in the world but he for sure didn't need to be breeding around our place. 180 pound 3 point. Long smooth beamed buck.

Congrats.

Just curious, why would it be bad for him to breed?

Happy Birthday and congrats on the buck! The point some people are trying to make is that culling doesn't work, otherwise after 25+ years of managing that way, that deer wouldn't have existed.

I agree to a certain extent. But there is always a few running around no matter how hard you try and manage.

Did people manage bucks 25 years ago?
I mean, if you say so I'll take your word for it...........just curious.
Must be some monsters there. A fella with access to something like that certainly wouldn't pay to go hunt a high fence. No way.

Congratulations!!! I agree that he needed to be shot.

Culling might not affect the gene pool, but this deer won't be eating any more groceries which will now be available to deer with better genetics. Why would anyone want to keep feeding this deer??? Regardless, again, congratulations.

Obviously the deer is old as dirt. I mean, when you have been actively managing for 25 years you don't shoot young bucks.

My mom wouldn't give anyone who had to kill big deer in big pens a chance. She much rather prefer a real man who can kill big bucks without paying to hunt high fence. Not to mention she isn't super interested in liars either. Sorry must have been someone else's mom.

Cull Buck, is a phase to justify killing a buck that has an inferior rack. It has nothing to do with management. Anyone educated in management knows does contribute genes too. You'd have to kill all the does in the herd to make sure you also got his mother in order to eliminate the 'BAD" genes.
JMJ does your mom have a small yard too for breeder bucks? grin

That's what I was thinking too. Wide for a young deer. I wish I had a little bit of them genes around here. Hard to find a wide rack around here. If it was really a 400yd moving shot, that was pretty good.

JT, you've been caught here slippin once. Now you have to bring your A game. Once you get caught, you can expect this everytime. Check out the Timber2 thread. He got caught slippin too.

JT came clean so I can give him some credit there. He had the guts to post a picture of a deer that wasn't what a lot of guys would even consider posting. Not a problem with me at all. Kill what makes you happy. To me that's A-game. smile

No. She only has the free range pen.

JT came clean so I can give him some credit there. He had the guts to post a picture of a deer that wasn't what a lot of guys would even consider posting. Not a problem with me at all. Kill what makes you happy. To me that's A-game. smile

I appreciate it. I'm trying to just be a honest regular member on here but there is always a few jerks that's gonna be rude.
For god sake ... This is one of my favorite bucks I've ever killed and he's nowhere even close to my biggest kill. Free range. It was my birthday and I made one hell of a shot and some of y'all wanna ruin it for me. I freaking regret even posting my story and pics.

My mom wouldn't give anyone who had to kill big deer in big pens a chance. She much rather prefer a real man who can kill big bucks without paying to hunt high fence. Not to mention she isn't super interested in liars either. Sorry must have been someone else's mom.

Lol you obviously have no idea. Your all speculation. My "Big Pen" buck is the only deer I've ever killed in a high fence. I have 5-6 bucks in the 135-145 range. And NUMEROUS 100-120 range skull mounts. Most well over 200 pounds. Got pics to prove it. So don't sit here an try and act like you know me. I'm a good person and made a mistake and manned up to it. Now get off my back..

Simmer down grasshopper. I was busting your chops. No reason to get all butt hurt. You got to understand you came on here lied, kept lying, and then finally came clean. People are always gone have the though in the back of their mins your full of shucks. You acted like a child and brought my mother into it, so I played along just to give you crap. I don't know you. All I know is you lied about a deer you killEd even said the management paid off. If there wasn't such great detectives here you would have never owned up to it and we all would have thought it was free range. I have no issue with someone killing a deer in a small pen, tiny pen, big pen, huge penumber, or whatever. It's not my cup of tea but I wouldn't have held thst against you to begin with. You just got to understand from now until a long while people are always gone give you crap about it. Most ppl like myself was just poking fun. Not being a jerk. Stop getting your feelings hurt so easy. My mom may have some extra tampons for your Manjina that keeps getting hurt so easy.

In all seriousness if you killed the buck that far awesome shot. Happy birthday and glad you killed a buck on your birthday. Go check your scales though...lol

Well I'm 28 years old and my dad got into the club when I was around 2-3. And he ended up buying the camp house and ended the club. It's our family camp.
He's been hunting the same power company land since day 1 of getting in the club. Same land I hunted growing up and still hunt. Except when I take my all expenses paid trip to the Big Pen.
All in all. I shoot one buck or maybe 2 a year off the property. And they need to be 4-5 years old and over 200 pounds. So I believe we do some pretty extensive select process on what bucks we shoot.

So all these 100in deer you killEd were they all culls too or just weighed 200lbs? Bcuz I'm betting most of those if not all were 2.5-3.5 yr old deer. So did you pay some penalty fee or something for killing inferior deer on your trophy managed land?

US too. We're trained to judge them at 500 yards. We make them run just to add to the sport.

I've tried that once. I failed horribly. Swinging the gun to keep up with the deer proved to be horseshucks at that distance. I probably shot the piss out of a squirrel in the trees behind the buck.

I know I'm getting flamed for this but I don't care. Enough already! This is really starting to feel like high school. The kid screwed up, admitted it, let's move on. A lot of y'all act like you never lied before. I dare any of you to say you've never bent the truth, failed to give all the facts, embellished, hyperbolized, mis-remembered, or flat out with full knowledge and clarity about what you were doing, lied. There's a time for calling out and there's a time for forgiveness. I see this kid keep trying and I see a lot of y'all just keep poking him in the eye with a stick. He just wants to belong to a place where he can come talk about stuff with like minded folks and why wouldn't he, this is a great place to socialize with plenty of top notch hunters and top notch people. I know some of it is just ribbing and I see him trying to play along but some of y'all just won't let it be and some of y'all remind me of those middle of the pack kids who think you can up your stock by slicing up what you think is a weaker kid. I don't think he's all that weak personally. He's already put up with more than he had coming imo.

Congrats on your buck JT. Heck of a shot, would like to have seen you do it.

JT needs to go back to the high fence where a guide can tell him what to shoot, the distance, age, and estimate an accurate weight.

Yeap, I need some pics to believe all that as well. The cotton field on power company land is interesting.

Was having the same thought. I guess it's possible, but I've never heard of it.

So you take the high fence trip often? I thought you said you've only killed one high fence buck. My bad. Must have misread it.

The way I read it; it was power company land at one time, but his father purchased it and now is their private family land

FWIW

Hmmm. Never really heard of the power company selling land other than lake lots. I've done the bid process a few times, seems like you have to bid every year, but I'm not sure about that.

Use photobucket...........but wait, you removed those from the other thread. Maybe you shut the account down. So tell us, does Alabama Power rent this land you manage to a farmer to grow cotton? Just curious. I've never heard of this.

So your "big Pen" buck was the only one ever killed in a high fence?? How come you have pictures on your Facebook page of several different big bucks with the same "guide"? I think you have a problem with the truth son. Actually I think you're nothing but a liar.

Let's dial it back a notch. Guy was excited about shooting a deer on his birthday, and the mob attacks. This isn't a Timber the outlaw situation, that is a cull buck by any definition, people have been managing deer for over 25 years (remember pulling jaw bones and doe tags) and APCo buys and sells timber land on occasion. Don't have any idea about this hunter or his place, but let's not get all riled up about it.

Furthermore your 14 point you were claiming to have just shot on November 30 was actually shot on November 25th.

I'd consider that a pretty weak apology considering you called him a "liar" twice in this thread, or was that even an apology at all?

I hope this dude don't turkey hunt they won't be any left. Nice kills though you gonna have to get thicker skin. Once you make your bed you just gotta lay in it. At some point it will stop. But for now it is entertaining.

I'd consider that a pretty weak apology considering you called him a "liar" twice in this thread, or was that even an apology at all?

He's already proven he's a liar. I don't believe a word he posts. He even lied about the date he killed the 14 point. Made it sound like he just shot it on the 30th. It was killed on the 25th. I'm done wasting my time with the little habitual liar.

I don't doubt he has killed some big deer. When Daddy has plenty of money, he can put you some studs. He can probably get your ass out of a bind as well.

You got it backwards there bud... I killed it on the 25th but the facebook page of the place I killed it didn't post the pics until the 30th.
And yes you should quit wasting your time bc your all around completely wrong. And to be exact, your making numerous false accusations and making up lies... So I think it's you sir that the liar these days...

Woah... My dad Is far from someone with plenty of money. We are just blessed to hunt some amazing land. Yes he pays a pretty penny for the bills around the place but he is not loaded and nowhere near rich or wealthy. So once again your huge imagination has created another false story in your head.

I don't like popcorn. Been putting a sick kid to bed. Haven't seen all these 135-145 deer. Jt does have some nice deer I'll give him that. He just needs to get thicker skin and realize he doesn't have to try and impress everyone here. Do I believe half the stuff he says...nope.Too many holes in half the stuff he posts. 400 yd running shot?

Like I said before I was just busting his chops. He's the one that got butt hurt. I wish the guy had 100 150in deer. It doesn't matter to me what kind of deer a person has. I'm sure all of us has stretched the truth on hunting stories before. One thing I will give JT credit for is he did finilly come clean and that was a hard pill to swallow. He needs to learn a little about jokes and stop taking everything to heart and so serious. Play along bud. No one is intentionally downing you. I was giving you shucks and you took it to heart lighten up a bit and roll with the punches. You getting all pissed and acting like a school girl is quite funny. The more people say the more you try to prove yourself on here. Who gives a shucks what anyone on here thinks? Idc what one person on here thinks of me...no one should. This is a great group of guys on here that enjoy reading everyone's stories. Just be ready for people to give you crap for the simple fact some of your stories are harder to believe because of your post about the big pen.

Nope. Just read enough of your posts on PFF to draw a picture. All you had to do here was throw in a grin and say Nope, the extra big pen and nothing else would have been said. When you get pissed and start talking about Mom's houses and such, people pounce.

Happy birthday and congrats on the buck. But I am curious why you travel around to so many different places and hunt public land when you have this awesome place? Also I have to admit it kind of felt like my birthday when I seen JT had posted a400yd running kill. Who needs a super bowl when you have great threads like this!

Congrats on the buck. Might I inquire as to what caliber you were using when you made the running shot at 400 yards. Had to have been a hell of a skint back round to hit him in the top of the spine when only aiming at the neck at 400yds. Im not gonna say you didn't make the shot because in order for what you say to have happened lots of luck to have happened and maybe that's all it was. Sometimes id rather be lucky than good. However with any normal caliber on a 400 yards shot you should have hit the deer in the azz

Using a 300 win mag as an example, at 400 yard the bullet would drop around 2 feet. So the average height of a mature buck at the shoulder is 3.3 feet, I'm not sure how aiming at the back of the neck would have produced these results.

So, you think he had his 300 Win Mag sighted in for 100 yards???

Not likely. If he was sighted in at 300 yards, that would be around a 9" drop at 400 yards. If the deer was running directly away, that would be possible.

At 400 yds running he would have had to aim at the back of the head. Im not saying it didn't happen, im just saying it doesn't add up. However with luck sometimes adding up doesn't happen.

Not many folks sight there rifles 6in high at 100 yards. Im not doubting that it isn't possible cause honestly in the heat of the moment and the big one is running away not many folks are going to have the capability to think to squeeze the trigger on a running shot, im just saying for all purposes if everything was perfect it shoulda been an azz shot

I'm not saying it happened or didn't happen, IDK, I'm just saying it is possible. About the only way possible, IMO, for a 400 yard running shot is if the deer were running directly away from you, especially if the deer had already taken one round.

Also, from the chart I looked at, it would be around 3" high at 100, 4" high at 200 and zeroed at 300 and -9" at 400.

A guy I hunt with has his rifle sighted in at 300 yards and actually killed a buck at around 345 yards this year. Of course it was not running smile

I don't have any idea what he was using. I just used 300 mag as an example.
Zero'd at 250 yards with 150 grain bullet gets you right at 19 inches of drop at 400 yards.
It's his lie though, he can tell it like he wants.

Exactly that was what I was getting at. I shoot that far almost every time I go to the hunting land, have a 300, and it just makes no sense. Like I said though a lot has to do with luck.

It's possible that he jerked off and got lucky.

I'm not here to bash the guy, he has obviously killed some good bucks. Definitely some that any of us would be proud to shoot. But I haven't seen anything between 135-145 like he stated. That 221 lb 6 pt doesn't look anywhere that heavy. A 200 lb deer would be as tall as him hanging up like that. And 400 yards running is pretty damn hard to believe, especially if he wasn't aiming a foot over that deers back. With his track record, I'm not sure I believe any of it. But johntravis you have killed some good deer and you should be proud. No need to pump yourself up, just be real and we'll do that for you

If the doubters will think about it... It was a running shot with him quartering away and I was very lucky to have hit him. Why the hell would I lie about something like that??. Who cares if I killed him at 50 or 500 yards... It's just a bonus and by far the most unreal shot I've ever made. Just like I stated.... I didn't even realize I hit him with the second shot until I got down there and realized he was spine shot.
It was a 270 with I believe 120 or 130 grain bullet I believe.

I shot a doe running directly away from me in the back of the neck at 200yds one time. I thought I was the man after that. Now you've gone and doubled that. Makes me feel inadequate.

I shoot a 300win mag when I take a gun and I sight in to be dead on at 200. At 30p I drop around 6in and at 400 it's around 17-18

I shot a doe hauling ass at 250 yards once with a .270 and 140gr. Hornady BTSP. I aimed at the tip of her nose and hit her through the neck. wink

My 30-06 drops 31 inches at 400yds. Try to improvise that shot. I have a 20x scope on it with a drop down reticle. I hit one last year at 425 one of three shots. I decided not to try that again.

My crosshairs were moving right in front to right behind her neck , probably a few inches below her head. Just trying to stay up with a deer running that far away was hard enough. I luckily made a connection. It was a god given birthday miracle.

I understand what your saying. But I'm not lying about my second shot. When he was on the run. I hit him dead on top of his spine. I put it right around his neck when he was running and squeezed the trigger. He dropped in the cotton and I didnt even notice. Until I walked down there and seen the cotton moving and I could hear something up ahead of me. Walked up and he was fading quick. One hole in the top part of the shoulder and then the chunk blew out the top of his back. There is exact details.
So... Ya'll still have cotton up in the fields? They harvested ours months ago... wink

Nice shot. I would have thought a running deer at 400 yards quartering away would have to be led a bit. What do I know......

Dude - you didn't just mis-type that twice when typing about shooting a buck, did you?

Stay on point with the story, bro.

Man that's why we have questioned this, because we have thought about it. Im not trying to take away you glory and the kill. I would have shot it as well. Glad you made a personal record and lucked out with the spine shot. Did you hit him on the first shot. If so you better be glad you did hit him on the second cause you likely would have never found him

And this is how people justify shooting a "180 lb spike" smh grossly overestimating weight .. Thing woulda weighed 225 if he hadn't blew that 40 lb chunk of meat out when he spine shot it .
On a side not me and JTs girlfriend both got a little choked up while reading this thread !!!

Haha... Not only are gender pronouns repressive and discriminatory, they could also make it more difficult for some if they can't remember a story or are conflating one or more stories into one...

Congrats on the buck... but the ways some of these stories unfold are exactly why we have this thing called the right to "remain silent". It's also a perfect example of why attorneys generally want clients to keep their mouths shut and not get diarrhea of the mouth. Not judging any of it other than that...

Maybe aldeer can update the EULA or Terms of service to say... "Anything you say/post can and will be used against you for weeks on end - deservedly so when caught in outright bullsh!t or hyperbole at best..."

One factor people seem to always discount on long running shots is the horizontal axis. (Not taking a shot at OP, just always thought this was fascinating. Argued with a coworker who said the bullet got there so fast at long ranges it didn't matter.)

Let's use some good round numbers, and I'll choose a very hot round for published ballistics.

400 Yard Shot
130 Gr Hornady SST Superformance .270WIN

The average velocity (out of a long test barrel) for this round over 400 yards is 2,787.4/fps.

400 yards = 1,200 feet.

So, it would take that round roughly .43 seconds to travel 400 yards.

So how fast is a deer sprinting? Google gives us a round number of 30 MPH.

30 MPH = 44 FPS

So, a deer traveling perpendicular to the shooter, at top sprint, will move (44 FPS * .43 S) 18.92 feet in the time it takes that round to reach its target.

Also, the drop of that round with a 200 yard zero is 16.7" at 400 yards.

So, to hit a deer at an intended spot at full sprint at 400 yards, you'd have to lead it by 18.92 FEET, AND compensate for 16.7 inches of drop.

Wild, huh? The vertical axis doesn't seem to matter much anymore, does it?

Also, the drop of that round with a 200 yard zero is 16.7" at 400 yards.

So, to hit a deer at an intended spot at full sprint at 400 yards, you'd have to lead it by 18.92 FEET, AND compensate for 16.7 inches of drop.

Wild, huh? The vertical axis doesn't seem to matter much anymore, does it?

Jerk off still sticks in my mind. grin

Ahhh... great point. Plus when you spine them at 400 yards, you can see the stalks wiggle. Genius, pure genius.

Out of all people you need to back off... You've yet to come up with a true reason to bash on me... Not a single thing you've said or accused me of has turned out to be true. So once again let me correc you... The cotton had been picked.. Not bush hogged. There's still a little cotton left on the stalks. Which the deer enjoy eating the seeds out of along with the little hreen fertilized grass underneath. You obviously have never hunted cotton fields or you would be aware that you leave the stalks standing. Smh. Now please... Fall off my thread and go back to another thread and start bashing that one for a while.

How do we ever kill ducks that average 73 fps? I don't know why but that math doesn't apply to a hunting situation.

No I wasn't asking you I was asking the OP. I think I know who's that is. It's just a picked field. Nothing special just stalks not cut yet.

I love this. Why would somebody lie about how far they shot a deer? Why the hell would somebody lie about killing one in a high fence?. Snowflakes just liked to be told go job I guess. So happy birthday and good job. I just hate it for the next guy who does everything right and gets torn apart on the internet because of crap like this.

Well I dunno about OP, but I generally pass on flying ducks at 400 yards with my Mossberg or Beretta. BUT if I had my 270...

Because you are matching speed of target with the swing of the gun. Normally people who are poor wing shots simply stop the swing when pulling the trigger. Shooting behind the target.

What did I miss about him abusing a woman?
I have been sitting thinking all day about JT bucks and hunts. I have come to the conclusion he has to be the baddest dude on aldeer. Shooting bucks in a pen, making 400 yds shot, and now I hear he even beats women. Damn this dude is the real mccoy. I was actually going to ask him about paying to come hunt his 25 year managed property where 120lb bucks are really 180lbs and where bullets magically fly perfectly to the target at 400 yds. When I grow up I want to be just like this cat.

BTW I'm still waiting for pics of a 135-145 buck. All I saw was one that may break 135 and the rest were 100in deer. He did say he had a shed full. All I saw was a handful.

That one buck is a pretty good one. Id like to see more of what he shot.

More interesting to me would be to see what his dad shot. 25 years of management I reckon hes shot some nice ones..thats for sure.

Post up some more of your and your dads bucks...wed like to see them.

He will probably just go get random pics of deer off the net and say he shot them or photoshop himself in there. Hard to believe anything this cat says.

A quick Google search of John Travis Gibson reveals some interesting nuggets....Hey, we've all got problems and skeletons in our closet, but this kid needs to stop lying and grow up or go away.

Can we get the same records on him that the aldeer detectives found on timber2?
