I use Hoppes #9 then brake cleaner then re- oil on the metal parts. Be sure to keep the brake cleaner off the wood and plastic though.

I use ATF and fine steel wool. ATF has a lot of detergents in it and won't harm the finish. Works better than oil in my opinion. Steel wool will rub the bluing off if you rub it hard enough so be aware.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I would imagine that brass and copper wool would be much better than steel based wool as it would be softer. Yep. It's a lot easier on the bluing
