Anyone ever called you on a cold morning you planned on sleeping in to help you find a Boone and Crockett giant that they shot and couldn't find. Well, when you find the deer it ends up being a 100" 7 point... Then you hear the famous words "Well, I could have sworn he was bigger than that!" That has happened to me twice! They are always 60" bigger until they are found.

...Shrinkage...cold morning...when you find...it..."Well, I could have sworn he was bigger than that!"... Sometimes it pays to read the whole message rather than just skim through it turtle head

Get on FB and find some "what will he score?" Posts you don't even have to get out of bed. Both of these had ground shrinkage I could have kicked myself for shooting the first one.

The focus on "inches are the only that matters" is the root of all evil. Ground shrinkage creates guilt, and who the hell wants that when you are enjoying the gift of pursuing whitetails?
I'm so glad I hunt my own land now so whatever I shoot is not to be judged by anyone but me and the Lord above.
I have enjoyed the process of hunting in its entirety when the pressure is not there of making sure whatever deer I took met every body else's requirements.
I have taken some damn fine deer, passed on some damn fine deer, and also taken a couple bucks that elitist inch measurers would scoff at. It all depends on what I'm feeling like doing at that time. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I eat what I kill too.
To each his own but I'm sick and tired of it only being about inches.
When I take a friend or guest they always ask, "what do you shoot down here?" My answer is a legal deer that YOU would be proud of.

What I tell people I bring to my place I try to shoot mature deer no matter what they score and to shoot what they will be proud of and if it makes them excited then shoot.

I have had exactly the opposite happen so far.
I've had to go looking for a friend's deer on doe days when he claimed he shot a doe. I pointed out that the only fresh tracks were a little buck. We drug a little 1" spike out of the river when we finally found it. This happened twice - the same person and both times the little buck fell in the water.
I shot a 5 point in a swamp in the TNF. When I got to him, it was an 8. Small deer and rack but 8 solid points.
I shot a 6 point from a 15' high stand at about 15 yards on family land and it turned out to be about a 90" 8.
I shot the second largest deer I have ever killed as a 100" 6. When we recovered it the next morning, all the same hunting buddy could say was "LOOK AT THE SPREAD ON THAT DEER". It was a 130" 8.
Whoever is happy will make others happy too. Anne Frank

They could not be talking about inches but age. Someones goal might just be to shoot mature deer and it "shrank" from a mature deer to a young buck.

Over the years, and bucks, I have usually underestimated, slightly, the size of bucks I've shot. I did kill the snot out of a nice up and coming three year old one time that was highlighted in the sun. It happens.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
