You did the right thing help a man out. I did the same thing for I guy I buy corn and wheat from. I wired a few lights in his barn. It was several buys later he said its on me this time, I may need another light fixed.
I was not wanting a thing for helping out and got it anyway.

I understand, it's not about paying for the drink at all. Just the principle of it. Like 231 said best to just brush it off and know you did a good deed on your part. Maybe the fella was so happy about the coin you saved him he just had a blank moment.

You just be you and let him be him. Don't give it another thought or keep score. Some folks simply aren't geared up like you.

That's not to say let yourself be screwed in a business deal, just be kind and giving in situations like that.

Yup, this.

I wouldn't read anything else into it unless something similar happened on another occasion. This guy doesn't have a Budda sitting on the counter does he?

I try to give folks the benefit of the doubt. Besides, I like to believe it'll bring me good karma. You never know what another guy is going through. He could literally be pennies away from making ends meet. You called him a friend, your words, not mine. A $1.50 is nothing if the guy was truly a friend. Rest easy knowing good karma is on your side.

This is the first thing that came to mind, "Give to Cesar what is Cesar's" (Mark 12:17) and move on.

Who knows what situation he may be in with his business/home finances/etc.

This. I wouldn't take a payment of any kind from him. I just found it odd he didn't offer. I guess we are just cut from different cloths.

What matters really is what you did and why you did it and from what I understand it was just to help someone out and you did just that. that's what being a neighbor is all about regardless of whether you got compensated for it or not.

The guy acknowledged how much you saved him.

What's to write he isn't currently trying to get you a better payment than $1.50 drink, with some better gift to give you later when you show up again?

If it really bothers you, then you need to be telling your friend, so he knows how you feel.

You honestly don't know why he didn't do it either (give you the drink) and probably won't know, until you ask him.

Ask the guy if he doesn't make some effort in repayment later on. His answer may humble you. Just my thoughts.

God Bless,

You've already been paid. You just don't know it yet. It's marked down in an ancient book.
