I was hesitant to post anything about this in the last few weeks, but I decided to today, because the inevitable has happened...
My oldest son has always been a difficult young man to reach. We have had our good times and we have had our really bad times. He was a caring young man and a sensitive young man, but he has always had his struggles. First with ADD, then with alcohol and drugs.
I have tried to be a good father to him. I have disciplined him with love when needed and I have loved him when he needed love. I have bailed him out of trouble when he needed it and I have left him in jail when he needed a lesson. I tried to do the best I knew how to do at any given time. He was a good hearted boy, but he had some things get a hold of him that in the end he couldn't shake.
He has been at Grandview medical since December 22nd. He was admitted with liver failure due to alcohol and prescription pain killers. At first I though there was hope, but once they moved him to the ICU, I had the realization that he was not going to leave that hospital alive... That was my first moment when I knew.
There was a steady decline from then. If you have liver failure from drugs and/or alcohol, you can't qualify for a transplant until you are clean and sober for 6 months. The doctors told us that he was not going to make it that long. I prayed, but God's will is God's will...
Last Thursday I had to make the difficult decision not to prolong his life with a feeding tube, respirator, or a resuscitation. That was the hardest decision that I have ever made, and my second moment.
I have been spending time with him every morning and every afternoon and seeing his condition progressively getting worse. I stopped by the hospital as usual this morning and he was particularly bad. All the IV's were gone, and the doctors were simply trying to give him comfort. I stroked his head with my fingers before I left and told him I loved him. Once in my truck I broke down and prayed to God that if this was his will that he take Chris as quickly and painlessly as possible.
At about lunch the Doctor called me and told me Chris was close and I needed to come to the hospital. I called Mrs. Irish and my father and they both met me there. I held Chris and stroked his hair and the nurses came in and asked if the Chaplain could come in and she did. She prayed with Chris and for us and then she sang a song. As soon as she had finished singing, Chris went to be with the Lord.
I was there for his birth and literally caught him as he came out and I was there when he went to meet the Lord. I know he is in a better place. I stood in the parking deck and Grand view today and asked God to give me a peace if he was with him and he did.
I don't post this to ask for your prayers or your sympathy or your sorrow. I post it for you to take the time to heal any and all relationships you have with people that you love. All children are different and require different parenting to get through to them. Love them. Don't give up on people. Hold them dear to your heart, regardless of what they are going through.
Love is the greatest gift that we have as humans. Give it freely.

This had to be so hard and painful to write. You are a hell of a man for having gone through this and sharing the experience with others in the way you have.
God rest his soul. He is now at peace with himself. Healing prayers for you and your family. I hope time heals and provides the peace you need and deserve as a grieving parent.

Irish, I don't even know you. Only having a 3 year old myself, I can't imagine the memories you have with your son. I have kids ranging in age from 27 to 11. I have twice had to face the news that my child would not live through the day and by the grace of GOD did not have to live through either ending in the loss of a child, once even signed organ donor papers to donate my oldest daughters organs. I just remember relying on the Lord for strength and comfort and praising him for the outcome. I still can't imagine your pain.
I have always said that parenting is the toughest job in the world and you have no idea how you're doing until it's probably to late to change it and often what you do or don't do doesn't seem to matter.
I have a 15yo that I'm sure is headed down a terrible road and he has no interest in changing directions and the rest of my children are either already productive members of society or seem to be headed that way, I don't know how it is that you love, teach and train them all the same and one goes so far off track but they will follow the road they chose sometimes and not the road you wish to lead them down.
I will pray for Gods comfort for you and your family.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. I want to take a minute this morning to respond to all of the wonderful posts and prayers and thoughts of kindness. From all of our family... Thank you all very much. I want you all to know that I have a very close and personal relationship with God and he has given me an inner peace about this whole thing, however our battle is not over. Mrs. Irish and I together have 5 children and 3 grandchildren. We love them all and all present unique challenges. I have an older daughter from my first marriage who is beautiful and wonderful. Her mother passed away when she was a young girl, and we all had to deal with that, but she has been able to overcome, married a great young man and given us 3 wonderful grandchildren. My son's name was Chris. he was 29 years old. He was my oldest son. He and his younger sister Chelsie were very close. They were born only 18 months apart and were almost like twins. They were both teenagers when their mother and I went through a painful divorce. I got custody of them and Irish Jr., my youngest son, who was only 7 years old at the time. He is 19 now and in college and is a fine a young man as a father could ask for. Chris and Chelsie didn't fare well during or following the divorce, and despite my best attempts at parenting, devolved into drug and alcohol abuse and never seemed to untrack their lives, culminating in Chris' death yesterday. Chelsie now seems to be facing her own demons head on in the wake of Chris' death. She has drawn closer to God and we as a family are hoping and praying that God uses Chris' death as an impetus for change in Chelsie's heart, and a springboard for a turnaround in her life. So if any prayers are sent up by you fine folks, don't worry about me, I'm a tough old bastard, send them up for Chelsie. She needs a turnaround. I also have a 22 year old stepson that Mrs. Irish adopted from a terrible broken home before we were married. I could write an entire book on him. It was so bad at times that Mrs. Irish and I sincerely thought he was possesed by a demon and comtemplated an exorcism. I pulled out all the stops just to get him through high school, including forking out over $500 a month for a few years to put him through a highly focused alternative private school, on the premise that he was going to join the military after he graduated. Well... The best laid plans of mice and men, he decided he didn't want that and thought he was going to freeload. When I put the Kibosh on that plan and he left for California and then on to Portland, Oregon where he currently lives as a vagabond. I have pretty much given up hope for him, but I'm sure God and Mrs. Irish have not, so if you want to send up some prayers for him, I'm sure it couldn't hurt either...  God love you all...

Once again... The outpouring of support from you guys has been overwhelming. What an incredible group of folks on here. We can argue and piss and moan at each other, but when one of us in in need everyone steps up to the plate and goes to bat. It is truly inspiring. Outdoorsmen are great folks by any standard. I have responded to all the private messages, but there is no way I can respond to everyone in this thread. I can say that I truly love you all and I thank you for your support and prayers from the bottom of my heart. If you missed it please go back and read my second post in this thread. My youngest daughter and my stepson still need your prayers. And my ex-wife, Chris' mom is having a particularly difficult time dealing with this situation and she could use your prayers too. I know from replies and PM's that other folks are going through similar circumstances. If any of you need to talk, PM me and I will give you my number and you can call. God has strengthened my faith through this whole ordeal, and if I can lend an ear i will be happy to listen. We will have a visitation at Deerfoot Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday 1/22/2017 from 5:00 to 6:00 in the chapel with a brief memorial service immediately following.
