I started hunting some new property this year that is pretty much all river swamp. I'm wanting to get some feeders out in the off season so I can put cameras on them and get a feel for the bucks and herd in general. Only problem is we're covered up with pigs... I've got a few ideas but thought maybe y'all would have some helpful insight. And yes, I do plan on shooting the hell out of the pigs year round.

It might take a lot of work but i have a buddy of mine that has a place in Pickens County that put hog wire around his greenfields to keep the hogs out of it - u may be able to do something similar around those feeders

Has he noticed if the deer are hesitant to feed inside that fence?

We got tired of feeding the hogs and made some new gravity feeders that the hogs can't get into. Made them out of PVC and PVC elbows. Hogs only get the spill from filling and whatever the coons spill out. Deer and turkeys can get their head into the feeder.

Slughunter's idea is cool. You can find these Moultrie Gravity Feeders for less than $20 and put them higher than a hog can reach, yet low enough for a deer. They hold about 40 pounds of corn.

Fortunately no. We kept them filled from end of season last year until the end of March. The only issues were some deer were skeptical about putting their head into it for a couple weeks, but got the hang of it; and the coons would sit up in the elbow and spill it out for themselves and their buddies, I've got some ideas that include spikes and lead to deal with them this year.

These work on the same principle. You might come out cheaper with something like this. Those PVC elbows are expensive. Ours hold about 60 lbs of shelled corn.

If it comes to that y'all will be the first people I enlist. My only concern with those Moultrie feeders is the amount they can hold. Our camp is pretty remote so I can't fill them as often as I would like.

That gravity feeder above is a great idea.

We've used 16' x 50" hog panels. Clip them in half and make 2 that are now 16' X 25". Some tent stakes, rebar and coated wire and close in your feeders. Panels are about $20 each, and figure 2 of those per feeder (which you will cut in half to make 4 total/feeder). We've made them and it kept the hogs out. They were never able to jump over them at all.

Also, trophy rocks with a hole drilled 3/4 of the way through and put on a piece of rebar works well to keep the hogs from rolling it off. You will need to support the rebar with a T-post and some zip ties.

3FFarms, is this the paneling that you're referring to?

http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/feedlot-panel-cattle-16-ft-l-x-50-in-h

And with the trophy rocks, you're running the rebar into the ground, threading the rebar through a drilled hole in the rock, and then letting the trophy rock sit on the ground...is that right?

You need to build a pen around your Feeder. Hog panel, t posts, or substitute cow panel cutbin half length wise. Make it in a circle and as big as you can afford. We use 6 panels cut in half which equates to 12 panels. 16ft long each. It works like a charm, but requires effort.

Very effective and will pay for itself in no time.
Only thing I would change is the feeder to be a gravity protein feeder, I.e. boss Buck.

That is correct on the panels. That's what we have used in the past although that setup Seminole has is pretty awesome. Ours are nowhere near that big and are square, although the hogs have never gotten into them. As far as the trophy rocks go, we've drilled holes all the way through and let it rest on the T-post and also have drilled it 3/4 of the way through and let it sit on top of the rebar. Pics below...

Take a barrel and put a toilet flange in the bottom. Come out of the bottom with a short piece of pipe then put a T on it. Cut two pieces of pipe for each end of the T a foot or so long. Hang it fill it up with corn, see where the corn gravity flows to and then cut the pipe off at an angle with the long part of the angle on the top. This will let the corn gravity feed down to the end of the pipe and the angle will keep it dry. When they try and each out of the end of the pipe at little will dribble out on the ground. Put it high enough the hogs can't get to it and you're good to go.

What is the height of the fences? Any hogs get over or root under?

Read a study from Texas A&M (I think) that they should be between 24-32 inches but the large hogs could get over the 24 incher.

Billy Ray - we cut a 50" cow panel in half using bolt cutters. So, mine are 25 in high. I have had a couple of big hogs jump it, and have since dispatched them and added a single row of barb wire on top to increase height. Hog panels would be best but it drives the cost up. These really prevent the sows and pigs from wiping out your feed, laying around the feeder all day and running all the deer off.

There are some tricks to putting it up quick. You drive a stake in the center and determine the radius of your pen. Cut a string to that length and tie the end to,the stake. Then you can mark your post locations by pulling your string tight and walking it in a circle.

I haven't had any trouble at all with rooting under the pen. The circle is the trick. They will just walk around it and don't have a corner to nudge on.

The deer got with the program quick and just bounce right in easy....even the yearlings.....

I'd rather see a taller panel than adding a strand of wire on top, too much chance of a deer catching a rear leg between the wire and top of the panel.
