Main thing is to pick a full season variety with good intactness. Usually those have the better roots and stalks.

I'm hoping my situation is just a case af plenty of natural food. Maybe it'll turn off cold and they'll come out more when feeding in the day. We have grass in places right now where there hasn't been any in months. Heck of an acorn crop too and my cornfield is right next to hundreds of acres of hardwoods. Time will tell

Personally, I think he is 2.5, maybe 3.5 at the oldest. He's long legged, no girth in the belly or chest and a long nose. This is on a farm that I own and while not necessarily a requirement, I prefer them to get to at least 4.5 before we kill them. He could be a really good one with a little more age.

If you think that's a two year old you'll never kill a deer there.

We've killed plenty of mature bucks on this farm. That 8 point aint even close to being mature. Hell, my 14 year old son passed him twice before I did. He knows he's not mature. Thanks for your insight though. Very valuable.

So you really think that buck is 2 years old?

What would be your minimum acreage that you'd plant for it to be beneficial?

83% of all statistics are made up.

A bag plants roughly 3 acres so I'd try to plant at least that. Do the math if you make just 100 bushels per acre that's around 6000lbs of corn per acre. Make more than that and well you can do the math.

In my original post I said that I thought he was 2.5, maybe 3.5 at the oldest. I'm not an expert by any means, but that is still my opinion. One thing I am positive about is that we have plenty of mature deer on the place and he isn't one of them.

For example:
3 year old...

4 years old...

5 years old...

Dead...

Some don't grow as much...

3 years old

4 years old

5 years old

Dead

And some get away...
2 years old

3 years old

4 years old

5 years old

One thing is for sure, if you kill them at 2 or 3, they will never get to 5.

Droptines, I'm not expert either, I was just curious. You've obviously got a great place and keep tabs on the bucks that are coming through so you know better than anybody else thumbup

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as an ass with that last post. Re-reading it, it sure sounds that way.

I'll freely admit that without prior history, I'm certainly no expert at judging the specific age of deer. I guess we age them in one of 2 basic categories: 1.Too Young. 2.Mature. If they don't look mature, we pass. So far, so good.

Thank you sir for the info! Gonna give it a try this spring. How about fertilizer.....I usually use triple 13 on my property. Will that be ok?

central ala,
I made the nocturnal comment as sarcasim because some believe its the food.

I don't know how old that deer is, but if those antlers are on a 2 yo he could turn into something really special.

After this years corn crop (we didn't have a drought until Oct) I will be going back to Pioneer variety.

Remember corn doesn't by the pound but the seed count. What I'm about to say has only happened to me with Pioneer. If the ear on the stalk will turn upside down when it dries, the husk will protect the ear from weather and last to turkey season if not eaten. My non-Pioneer corn this year did not do that.

Wish this were the case on all property's. I have 3 ac of corn/ beans mixed with lanes planted in Oats and at this point they don't seem to care at all about it. Darn sure do not wander around in it during the day.

Exactly what I'm facing. I'm hoping its an abundance of natural food right now and it changes before season is over

I've heard good things about alfalfa but never tried it. The people around that have tried it had a hard time getting a stand. You have no problem with that? Seems they said something about the heat?

I didn't take it that way at all and I enjoyed seeing all the pictures and the videos you have posted of your kids shooting bucks.
