Cut a few strips when it gets cold and you can't beat the deer out with a stick.

We rotate corn and beans on different parts of the farm every year. The beans NEVER draw the deer like the corn. Not even close.

And let's not even talk about the turkeys....

No doubt. But beans provide good protein in growing months but once fall hits standing beans are nearly useless when standing corn is there. I love the sight behind the bushog when the ground turns yellow! I need to lay a few fresh strips down when're it dries out come to think of it.

Standing corn is a curse if you go to the mid West. The deer never leave it during daylight. Not a good situation when you have a limited amount of time to hunt.

Thomas Jefferson. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Life is too short to only hunt and fish on weekends!

Substitute peanuts for the beans.

Just curious. Is that a young deer? Does it need another year or two where you hunt?

Personally, I think he is 2.5, maybe 3.5 at the oldest. He's long legged, no girth in the belly or chest and a long nose. This is on a farm that I own and while not necessarily a requirement, I prefer them to get to at least 4.5 before we kill them. He could be a really good one with a little more age.

I think it all depends on how much is standing. This field is only about 3 acres. I have hunted similar stands of standing corn in KS and IL with good results. Now, if it's 300 acres, that's a whole different story and I am with you 100%.

I was hunting in MN, and the deer would walk through the standing field corn to get to the standing sweet corn.

The type of corn can also make a difference.

Sweet corn just isn't bred to stand very long. We call it intactness in the Ag business. The heat and storms we have here would decimate sweet corn standing that long.

Do they not eat the corn off of the stalk or will they only eat it when mowed down?

They'll eat it either way. I have watched them pull an ear from the stalk and roll it around it their mouths knocking the husk off and eating the kernels.

Sho wish I had one standing corn to hunt over this year. Our entire place was in beans this year.

I've got some. They stayed in it four hours last night. Every deer I've seen in the daytime has gone straight to the sunflowers right beside my corn. Seem to like to eat corn in the dark. Reckon what's up with that?

Black oil. Cheap, easy to plant, require little to no fertalizer. Deer seem to like em pretty good.

Can you bush hog strips in standing corn and hunt it? Seems like I had someone tell me once that you couldn't.

I've heard the same thing. Can't find nothing about it in the rulebook. I'm 15ft up in a shooting house looking over mine right now. It's on a slope so I can see through it. If I thought it would get more deer in here in the daylight, I'd sure bushhog some. I wish I could see as many as 257 sais he does. He is apparently in a place with pretty good density. I'd just like to see 20 deer in a field once. The best we do is 6 to 8. That's rare. Don't think standing corn is a magic wand of some kind. You can't see big numbers if you don't have big numbers.
