I saw a black yote, not near as pretty as Matts, killed in Hale Co 1981 er so that I weighed at 55 pounds.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I screwed the pooch once and missed 2 black coyotes in one day with my bow. One had the white blaze chest, but one was solid black.

I saw a black yote, not near as pretty as Matts, killed in Hale Co 1981 er so that I weighed at 55 pounds. THANK YOU, BhamFred! Tons of people don't believe they were here, back then. I saw my first Alabama coyote the first time I ever deer hunted in Alabama, in 1976. My buddy's cousin (older fella) pulled up and said he'd shot a German Shepard...the area where we were hunting is all family land, and they all knew each other and knew dogs that belonged/didn't belong in the area. I looked in the back of his truck. It was a +/- 75 yd headshot with a 30-06, so there wasn't much there forward of the ears, but the legs and his tail told the tale. I said "That's a coyote." All the older guys laughed at me and said there are no coyotes around here. Opening day of the season in 1976 marked the 6 month anniversary of my Dad's retirement from the USAF, and the ceremony was is Wichita Falls, Texas, where we'd lived for the previous year. At 13, I'd seen a coyote or two, before, and that headless, dead animal laying in the back of Archie's truck was a coyote.

Pretty yote. Congrats.
What is the population of yotes like where you killed this one? Back in the mid 80's, when we had very few yotes, I saw more "off" colored ones. I haven't seen one here that wasn't the normal coyote color in over 15 years.
I agree that most interaction with dogs that I have seen with yotes has been violent but I've killed hybrids and I've seen dogs and yotes running together. In the late 80's, I was crow hunting and a yote and a bulldog came in together to the crow call. I shot the yote and tried to shoot the bulldog but it got out of range too quick. I killed a coydog on our farm about 4 or so years ago. I posted pics of it here. It was normal yote colored but it's coat was at least 3 times as long as normal, especially on it's head and muzzle. I didn't weigh it, but it was big.

Very nice looking yote. I would have at least kept the pelt if not stuffed it.

Great kill, Matt!
The first coyote I ever saw was caught in one of my fox sets in 1979 in Perry co. I had no idea we had any in the area, and was sure surprised when I drove up on her that morning. Caught her in a 1.5 coil spring on a rear foot. She weighed 55 lbs and there was another one traveling with her with a slightly bigger foot that assumed was a male. She was colored just like the normal phase and I didn't realize 55 lbs was big for a coyote.
There was a traveling fur buyer that had been buying in Selma the day before and I found his motel and tried to sell it to him. He confirmed that it was a coyote, but said he had little demand for the fur and offered me $20. I turned it down, took it home and skinned and stretched it. I had to make a wooden stretcher; didn't have a wire one big enough to fit. When it dried I shipped it off and got $10 for it. Oh well.
The first few coyotes I saw in the woods looked much bigger than the ones I see now. I have no explanation for that. The Wilcox Progressive Era ran a pic of something killed in 1975 that they identified as a red wolf. I've forgotten that weight, but it was much bigger than the coyotes we have today. I had a friend in school who was taking a wildlife class who told his prof about it and he scoffed at the idea it was a red wolf; said it had to have been a coyote.

I've killed several upwards of 40-50 in my life but always around a working farm where there was plenty to eat. For some runt out in the pine woods of Alabama anything over 30lbs is probably a "big" one and they are typically are less than 30. I have seen a red fox that would go 20, but he was a professional chicken thief and looked about like a fat beagle except for the place the snare bout had him pinched in 2 pieces... As far as crossing with dogs I don't know how regular that is, but they sure seem to act like a house dog as I reach over with the end of my barrel and put one right between their eyes. So I don't know. Always seemed real likely to me based on that. I'm not expert.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Congrats!
I killed a black one if Fayette Co two years ago probably not to far from where that one was killed. I betcha it wasn't far. Dad killed one last year that wasn't as nice as this one, and we have two more on camera that are young.

If they're lucky, they can run with the coyotes. If they're not so lucky, they get turned into coyote turds. Coy-dogs have a reputation for being bigger, more aggressive and less shy of people.
