Going to break down and try wool ......what kind and where from so far as base layers go...I have the under armour 4.0 and still got cold...is the merino wool that much warmer? Or must I layer and layer and layer....21 yesterday morning and I got a little cold after a few hours.

For me, it's always my feet that are coldest. I bought some 1600 gram boots. They look ridiculous but they work.

As for merino wool, I use it too but you still have to layer.

Minus 33 Wool thermals work very well for me. I have a Filson wool coat for when it dips down below below freezing and it is hard to Beat Filson wool products.

Think about it as individual pieces. What is getting cold?
Merino wool is the best I have ever used, it insulates even when wet.
My system is good boots with battery insoles, merino wool socks, medium weight merino wool thermals ( LL Bean or Smart Wool ), Firstlite layer as mid layer and then depending on how windy or cold I have different outer wear to use most have different levels of insulation and all have windstop.
I hate getting cold.
Heat packs with sticky on the kidneys can help big time when really cold.

I hardly ever get cold, seems I retain heat from summer. Putting something round your neck helps wonders.

I hear good things about FirstLite Wool.

merino wool, and layers must be LOOSE, including wool socks. merino scarf. merino boggan. a fleece blanket (twin bed size) is great to wrap around your waist, and drape over your boots. keep yer neck warm, yer head warm and yer kidneys warm (thermal packets against the small of your back). and DON'T drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks while you're on stand. caffeine raises your skin's capillaries; they radiate body heat away from you. when you're sitting, wind can suck heat right out of the tops of your thighs if your britches are tight against your skin. this is where a blanket comes in handy ...

Although I'm an IceBreaker merino fan, I consistently hear good things about First Lite. They're having a sale on Realtree apparel right now.

Add this, like others have said:

http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/mili...wool-scarf.html

Link won't zero in. When it opens up type in wool scarf at the top search box and it'll be the first one of three offered, the olive drab US GI issue one for $5.99

Buy you some MT050 Whitetail Extreme stuff from Cabela's and you wont get cold. You're talking to the chilliest dude on Aldeer, here. 60 is freezing to me.

Goose down coveralls, a neck gaitor and Arctic Shield boot covers for me. I got the coveralls when Cabela's ran a sale of discontinued items. Wish I had bought another pair of those coveralls.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Yesterday I had on feet: Merino wool socks, toasty toe insoles, rocky 800g boots, .on bottom: Icebreaker merino thermals, loose cotton thermals and cabelas Berber fleece winds stopper bottoms. On top I had icebreaker merino thermal, icrbreaker merino zip up as well as icebreaker merino vest then the cabelas 1/4 zip Berber fleece hoodie. A pair of fingerless gloves and a face mask and I stayed warm sitting on stand from before daylight till 11:30. I have really liked merino wool since I've been using it this year.

I bought a crap ton of merino wool socks at the local unclaimed baggage in the ski section. New packs of 3 pairs for 5 bucks. I need to get by there soon to see if they got any more.

Part of the key of getting hot is knowing why you need to pack in if you're walking. The worst thing you can do it work up a big sweat form being over dressed

Depending on where everyone was hunting yesterday, it was 18* with a 8-10mph wind at my stand yesterday

Take one of the large sized hand warmers and put it on the back of your neck. Thank me later.
