So as far as a story goes...since I have been in town in Louisiana I have been hunting the stand we call the straight road. There's 600 acres of cutover in front of me. It's surrounded by about 1k acres of hardwoods and planted pines. Behind me is around 800 solid acres of hardwoods and planted pines. There are three lanes at this stand that are probably 10-15 yards wide. The south lane is 280 yards, middle lane is 320 yards, and North lane is 260 yards.
I have been seeing a good many deer every sit here. Some decent younger bucks around 110-120 and lots of does. We manage this property to only kill 4.5 year old deer or older unless its a cull or your my wifes grandad who made a boo boo this past weekend and killed a 2.5 yr old 8pt that would score 115ish.A few mornings ago before daylight I had two real big bodied deer come out on the south lane, but I couldn't tell what they were just knew they were big. Naturally they left before I could tell. That afternoon they appeared on the middle lane but once again it was too late to shoot. I thought I made out good horns on one of them but wasn't positve. The night before last two big deer came out and fought at the end of the middle lane. Couldn't see racks but could tell they had big bodies. Last night nothing big appeared. I knew that it was just a matter of time before one of them slipped up and came out a little early.
Last night it started raining about 11. It flooded all night and when I woke up this am at 430 it was still raining it's butt off and thundering and lightning. I almost went back to sleep but I checked the radar and it showed between 7-8 it was gone stop raining. I've had tons of luck hunting after a big rain storm. So I got my stuff together and headed out. I took my time getting there bcuz it was still pouring. Once I got there I sat in the truck until 620ish. It finally slacked up and I got on the Wheeler and headed in. Got up in the stand and it was still raining. Usually you can see to shoot here about 615 but I still couldn't see very well plus it was foggy. It continues to rain until around 715ish. Then it stops. The crows start to wake up birds start flying so I knew the deer should start moving. At 735 I catch movement at the end of the middle lane. Buck walks out of the cutover and starts slowly easing across the lane. I immediately saw horns and grabbed my gun. By the time I was on him good he was about to step into the cutover on the other side. He paused for a minute and quartered away from me and started taking a bite of some browse. I put my crosshairs about 6in behind his front shoulder so it would come out his other shoulder and squeezed off. I knew he was a out at the end of the 320 yard lane.
Deer hit the ground. I knew this was a pretty decent deer. I got a good enough look at him as he was crossing the lane to know he was at least 4.5 and a shooter. When I got down there he was wider than I thought and heavier. I rangEd the stand when I was standing by him and it was 314 yards. It's not my longest shot but is my longest shot on a mature buck.
My wife's grandad is a vet and we weighed him at his clinic in town. Buck weighed 213lbs on his scales and I scored him at 136 5/8. If he wouldn't have broken off his split brows on the left side he would have broken 140. He was 19 1/4 wide and had main beams that were 23 5/8in long. If his week side would have been as good as his normal side he would have easily been mid 140s.
He's not the biggest deer I have ever killed but I sure am proud of him. He is the first deeryear little man has ever got to touch so that right there makes him one of the most special deer I've ever taken.
