I went up Thursday morning to Fort Knox, and hunted that afternoon through Monday morning. Monday morning it all finally came together. I climbed 45' up a big oak, right in the middle of some thick stuff. Not sure what kind of trees were below me, but they had a bunch of leaves around the 25' level, which provided me plenty of cover (not that a person really needs much cover that high up). At 9:00am I see a doe moving through the woods at a pretty good pace. I then see another deer below me underneath the trees with all the leaves, but I couldn't tell what it was. Given how the doe was responding, I figured it was a buck dogging her so I went ahead and got the crossbow up and at the ready. Sure enough, he finally steps into a bit of an opening and I see it was a shooter. I didn't waste any time... he was 8 yards from the base of my tree, and at 45' up I was just about shooting straight down on him. As soon as I shot he took off - he went about 40 yards and I heard him pile up. Needless to say, I'm blessed to have him and want to publically thank the good Lord for sending that hot doe by my stand!!! Every place I hunted I had zero cell service, thus I was not able to provide any LFTT updates (AT&T continues to suck more every day...) Here's how I found him. Perch, as I laid the crossbow across the buck I thought of you and laughed out loud!!! Where I hunted Monday was my first time in that area. I walked in before daylight, and after the sun came up I noticed a fresh scrape about 10 yards from my tree. When this buck took off after I shot him, he ran right through one of several scrapes that were really close to my tree. This year I switched to NAP Killzone broadheads. These things are devastating. Ray Charles could have followed that blood trail. It looked like this the entire 40 yards to him. This was the entry side. Again, NAP Killzone broadheads are devastating. I plan to use these for a long time... The cool thing about Fort Knox is they allow one archery buck AND one gun buck. I'll be headed back up there later this month with my slug gun. And, any buck(s) taken on Fort Knox are considered bonus deer, so I could actually go to a national forest up there and kill a third one if I wanted to try. Anyway, I'm blessed to have taken this buck up there, and am very thankful to have him. He is my first archery buck, so he's going to Charles at Artistic Whitetails. Now for a bit of fun with all of y'all... at Fort Knox (like Redstone Arsenal), all deer have to be checked at Hunt Control. When I checked this buck, their biologist is the one who checked him in. This process includes aging the deer. I know you only have the pics to guess from, but try to guess how old this buck is. I'll post the confirmed age tomorrow night after several of y'all have had a chance to guess. --Age update--
The biologist at Fort Knox aged this buck at 5.5 years old! He made the comment that not all bucks will be monsters rack-wise at that age. He said this buck was probably a spike year one, 4 pt year two, basket-rack 6 pt in year 3, 12" 8 pt in year 4, and what you see in the pics at 5.5 years old. He ended up pulling the jawbone and a couple of the front teeth, and is going to send them off to some lab for further analysis.
He also told me they had a doe checked in once that he aged at....... 14 YEARS OLD! He said people told him he was crazy, despite the fact that her teeth were almost completely worn away. He had lab analysis done on what was left of her jawbone and front teeth, and the analysis proved that he was right on the money - lab results said 14 years old!

CR I wondered where you had disappeared to ! Congrats ! When I saw the xgun i threw up in my mouth a little. I spent some time at Fort Knox, not as much fun as you had ! LOL It was called basic, the locals refer to it as FORT CLANK ! It's armor can be heard all day and night. Or at least it could. Nice deer, its great when a plan comes together ! LOL Or should i say a blind hog finds an acorn !!!! Drive safe coming home !

Congrats but dang you almost missed. I thought those cross rifles were better than that. How you figure that RC? I shot almost straight down on him, and was aiming for his spine - only missed that by about an inch.
