I was going through some papers from 1976. There were all kinds of gun ads in Sept and Oct right before hunting season. Thought you would enjoy seeing some of guns and prices. Tasco scope prices ain't changed much.

Man, I wish I could go back in time and buy a few of those, alot better quality back then yet alone the price. The tasco scopes are about the same price but not near as good as the ones that were made in Japan. Those prices make me sick.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

A 30-30 for $88! It's a wonder everyone didn't own one of those.

I wouldn't pay those prices today for a Winchester or a Tasco.

WOW! Wish I'd had the money and wisdom to have stocked up back then.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Those gun prices are crazy but the scope prices aren't much different from today for entry level scopes. I bet they were killing it on those scopes back then

I was 14 y/o and working as a farm laborer. $88 would have been a difficult but achievable goal for a kid with no rifle.

The Rem 742 wasn't worth $100, much less $189.

I first saw and shot a Rem 1100 in early 1985, and I thought it was the smoothest, slickest, most beautiful gun I had ever shot. I really wanted one, but by 1985 they cost a lot more than $199.

My Dad had a 742 rifle and I had the carbine. Both were damn fine shooting weapons. I know there were crappy ones but there were just as many people that didn't have a clue on how to maintain one

I don't remember Woolworth selling guns. Western Auto yes, but they didn't have much of a selection.sears was the place with a lot of guns. JC HIGGINS guns.

My cousin had a 742 JamMaster in .308. Beautiful piece of machinery, and only slightly less useful than a cinderblock boat anchor.

My first shotgun came from Sears, but not a Higgins, it was a Savage/Stevens 20 ga single shot, with a super-full choked barrel. Back in the mid-70's, if I showed up at a turkey shoot with it, half the time I won by default, as other people just gave up trying to compete with it. Couple of the guys that held turkey shoots around here asked me if I'd show up at the last minute, so they could draw enough entry fees to at least cover the prizes! *L*

My pawpaw has laid a bunch of animals to rest with his 742. Don't be too hard on them. It ain't the gun sometimes it's the shooter.

I think I was working at Jim Davenports Pizza in 1976. I think I must have made about $2 an hour.

I had a 1966 Mustang GT Fastback that my Dad helped me buy out at a used car lot on Bessemer Super highway for $600. I worked for about a year fixing that car up. It was dark blue with the light blue and white Pony interior, the Rally Pack gauges and the HP 289 in it.

I think I had a cheap ol' Universal 30 cal carbine, one of those $59 Ruger 10/22's and my prize possession was a Beretta Golden Snipe 20 gauge O/U shotgun my dad had given me. I always thought it was almost too nice to take dove hunting.

Oh... And I remember that a kid could actually afford to take his girlfriend to a rock concert on a minimum wage salary.

Bought my first shotgun at WoolCo which was the same as Woolworth. Single shot Stevens in 20ga. $49.99 if I remember. Still have it.

I have seen more 742s that worked than those that didn't. I lost a good friend to a heart attack about ten years ago that had one in .243 that was a tack driver and always went bang.

I wish I knew what happened to that rifle.
