Took the dogs out around 3:15. When I walked out the door the first thing I saw was my climber that I forgot to put in my truck last night. The second thing I saw was my truck door open and the dome light on from the previous night when I was going to put my climber in but stopped because I wanted to wash my hands first and then forgot to go back and put the climber in. So now I'm thinking my battery is dead so I go back inside get my keys and try to start her up and she fires right up. Whew! The next thing I notice is the smell! Unmistakably cat piss! Cat pissed all over what I think was my right rear tire. How lucky am I he didn't jump in my open cab to leave his mark or just as bad decide to mark my climber which was just sitting there! I had a cat piss in a truck one time where I had left a window rolled down. That was miserable!

Alright I'm all loaded up and on my way. Get there to my preselected tree which I didn't select carefully enough because the base is significantly wider than the destination so I end up with the standing deck slopped down. I needed a different tree but I wasn't going back down to try and find one in the dark. The most notable part of the sit was when a hawk landed in a tree no more than 5 yds away and maybe 2 yds above me. He did not seem to notice me and I took this as a good sign because if he didn't see me a deer wouldn't either. We hunted together for a few minutes but he figured out long before I did that there was nothing there to hunt and he moved on. I got down around 11:00 having seen and heard nothing remotely suggestive of a deer. I went to check the thing that had brought me there (refer to green acorn thread). About a week before there were roughly a couple hundred green acorns under a white oak within bow range of my tree. They were gone, every last one of them was gone. The weird thing is that they were completely gone, no shrapnel, no caps, as if someone came and collected them up in a bucket and took them home. Now I was confused so I started checking other white oaks. There were a ton in there and I just walked from one to another. Almost all of them had no acorns at all, a few had one or two and that was it. I also did not see any deer shiite under any of them. I have some theories but this is already getting long so I'll spare you.

Packed up and went home. Around 4:30 I half heartedly decided to go across the street to a stand for the afternoon. While sitting there I decided the wind was all wrong and thought about just going back home because I was pretty tired and didn't think I would see anything with that wind but since there was only about 45 min of daylight left I decided to stick it out. Honestly I was tired and at this point the thought of cleaning a deer and getting it to a processor was not all that appealing. So light is fading, I'm checking my sights, and decide that's it, not enough light. I put my arrow back in my quiver and slipped the quiver back on my bow and had no sooner done so when a fawn comes tearing through the woods no more than 5 yds in front of me heading to an oak that I had been hearing drop acorns all afternoon. Not 5 seconds later, what I think was a yearling was tearing through the woods about 10 yds away and stopped on a dime when she got even with me and froze. I think she probably saw me frantically trying to re-nock an arrow. I froze but the whole thing was pointless because there's no way I could have seen my sights anyway. The yearling never made a fuss, just turned and ran off the way she'd come. About 20 seconds later the fawn came running back and stopped right in front of me and was like "hey where'd everybody go". She never knew I was there and finally ran off.

Kind of a weird opening day but I had fun. Tomorrow afternoon I draw blood!

Oh yeah, sorry if you thought this was going to be about slaying a giant.

For those of us that weren't able to go, at least for me, I just enjoy reading about someone's trip that did get to go.

Same here Ford (although I was able to go). Those first hunts are always a toss up on whether or not you even get to the tree and have your bow. I always think I'm prepared, but the reality is I'm never fully prepared until the 2nd or 3rd weekend.

I'll always forget something stupid like a rope to pull my bow up

I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. Theres a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts. Ronald Reagan
