Why is Montgomery referred to as the Gump? A doctor I work for says it's because it rhymes with dump. Just curious

I suspect because Monkeytown is no longer politically correct.

IMHO "The Gump" should refer to Tuscaloosa since that's where Winston Croom (author of Forest Gump) is from (or so I thought) and the story takes place in Greenbow (Greensboro, 40 minutes down the road) and FG played at UA in the movie.

Nobody asked me before they named it though.

"Magic City" used to refer to where? Birmingham or Montgomery?

The way some folks say the city is Munt-Gum-Ree. Hence "The Gump" is just using the middle syllable. I always thought it was a stupid reference.

It has its bad places just like and other mid size city in the south. But it's a far cry from being a dump. Ride with me for a week and I'll show you the dumps in this state.

Heck I can't ever understand why the news and radio stations refer to the Montgomery area as central Alabama. It's less than a hundred miles from the Florida state line. When I'm in Birmingham their news channels refer to it as central Alabama which is correct.

Not sure why but it's been years since I've heard it referred to as the gump, but I use to hear it a lot

This^ I think it originated with truck drivers.

others say from a rap song from some rappers from here,... but I am pretty sure it was called Gump before them. www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=The%20Gump

I always thought it was stupid also. And only started hearing it the last ten years or so.

When I moved to Montgomery after school the only slang I ever heard was Monkeytown. Then about ten years ago I heard a local radio station use "the Gump".

We're about 15-20 miles from the Florida state line...Montgomery IS central Alabama, and Birmingham is north Alabama, to us. Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, etc., are "way up north Alabama".
