Who's hunting a WMA Open Day? I'm going to hunt my tried and true spot again this year.

I use to hunt Boykin WMA but they closed it down last year.
They closed Scotch this year too.
Might try Jacinto Port again this year.

I'll definitely be on one opening week, may not be opening day.

Ill be hitting Oakmulgee early in the season, first time out there (other than some scouting) so I don't know what to expect.

There's a good population there and it's not hammered during bow season.

Have any idea what opening day is like on the NF around Oakmulgee? Found a good spot, but seems to have a lot of traffic around.

Not bad. I hunt down the road from OM and hardly ever see anybody during bow season.

Like I mentioned earlier I haven't ever hunted Oakmulgee, but in my scouting I have found a few places that seem promising, but I also saw 2 trail cameras in two of the places so obviously someone has already beat me to those spots.

Were you in my spot a couple weeks ago?

TNF outside Oakmulgee. If not opening day then opening weekend.

I found the two this last Friday (9/23), one was just off one of the wildlife openings and the other I found was pretty deep into the woods not near much. I was in Oakmulgee not in the TNF

I'm on someone's trail cam on the NF outside of Oakmulgee. Ran into it while leaving the woods (with 34,928 chiggers apparently).

There won't be many people down there. Even if there were 500 people bowhunting there's 144,000 acres to spread out on

We will burn that bridge when we get there

I just asked because I saw some dude come out of the exact same spot I've been hunting for a while now.

Bait57 put the trailcam out - I don't own any. I'm going to check it today if I can keep my breakfast/lunch down long enough (some knothead at work gave me the screaming stomach crud).

Was that spot eat up with hog sign?

Setco mine rd area is the only place I have scouted. Probably somewhere in there, deep in a creek bottom.

Which end, 260 or 22 or somewhere in the middle?

Same. I'd say it would depend on the wind, which currently is forecast to be E shifting to S around midday and back to E mid-afternoon, but the wind forecast seems to be worthless out there anyway because I've often had it blow from every direction within a 30 min span. That place gives "hunt the wind" a whole new indiscernible meaning. I'll be counting on thermals in the am to keep me undetected. If you decide where your going and want to pm me I'll try and steer clear (unless your in my favorite spot and then I might have to lay on my horn :D).

... of course I'm kidding (about the horn).

Where is Setco Mine RD? I'm new to Shelby County. I just moved here two months ago from Opelika. I've about passed out scouting... We don't have hills like this where I am from.

Lol! Last year was my first year out there. Learned a lot. I believe I will be successful this year. I bet I haven't scouted 5% of everything that's out there but I've seen quite a few places where I thought "man this is a killer spot and there is no way I'm hunting here because if I shoot something and it runs that way I will never get it out of there!"

Take county rd. 17 south of maylene then right on 22. Setco is about 2 miles on your right. It runs all the way to 260 but there is a permanent gate at that entrance. And yes, those draws and ridges are no joke.

That's where I have been scouting but at the closed gate side. I park on 260 and walk in. I have only got pictures of a few does but I have seen deer 2 out of the 3 times have been out there. One was either a 4 or 6 point out to his ears.

You are so right! I don't know why anyone would waste their time.

Only spot I have to go this year. I may head down to Chambers County with my grandad. You guys know of any clubs in the Calera area that ever have openings? I hope to join one next year.

Yeah, sorry, that was sarcasm. There's a butt load of deer out there, it's just not very pretty scenery in most places and depending on where you kill one you may be in for a whole lot more work than you'd planned on.

Sarcasm was mine. Hey it's best to hunt where you're happy, right? Second best is to hunt where you can wink. Last year was my first year out there and didn't kill anything but learned a lot. I am very confident this year, can't wait.

That's what I'm wondering about here with Pelham Range. Won't be able to find out till Thursday. If no good things are open, well I'm not sure what to do. Got some bucks on camera on private land, but haven't had a daylight pic in 10 days. Found some good stuff on Choccolocco WMA this past weekend, but Chocco is a far-fetched gamble with a bow.
