The pawn show did tell his dad that if some reason he couldn't get it back that he could just come back up and fill out the paperwork and they will give it to him
Could that not be considered a straw purchase or fraud in some way if he (father) purchased the rifle knowing he was going to give it to someone with pending felony charges? Sounds like a legal gray area.

Sounds like a legal gray area. The rifle is technically registered to the father. It was never the son rifle to pawn off. The father took the son up their yesterday to get back what wasn't his in the first place. So they told the father if he couldn't get it they would let him fill out the paperwork so he could then he is going home to put it in the safe and not let the son ever use it again

There is another issue at play with this question.
If he answered yes to the question on the 4473, then he is going to get turned down no doubt. But, if he answered no, he is not under indictment for a felomy offense, then he committed a new federal felony by lying on the 4473. I'm curious how he answered that question. Good question I never thought to ask him that yesterday, but I will

I forget the exact numbers, but in 2014 IIRC, there were over 100,000 KNOWN 4473 where the folks lied when completing the form. The feds only prosecuted like 10.
