I plan to have a pole barn built soon...wood post with metal trusses. It will be a 30 x 60 with a 20 ft lean to on each side. The 30 x 60 will eventually be closed in with metal. I am leaning toward insulating the roof with roll insulation between the metal and purlins. I am thinking that the lean to's will also need to be insulated mainly for condensation.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
By the way...I priced spray foam on the 30 x 60 roof. It would cost around 3500.00 and I would have to paint it if I didn't want to see that ugly orange color.

That spray foam is nice stuff. Keeps my home at 75 all day. I would do the sides as well when your done. Biggest thing I can tell you is to try and finish your barn completely at one time.

It be's that way sometimes.

I got a 48x60 I am starting today and a 40x48 starting Monday. Both will be insulated with roll insulation. The 40x48 has a 12x48 lean to on each side that will not have insulation. The roll insulation is available in a couple different R values.

I used bubble wrap insulation in my 30x60x12 plow barn. It's plenty sufficient. Very economical too.

Thanks for the input. I priced some single bubble roll insulation today from a local company. It's a 6 ft x 125 ft roll for 150.00. It's supposed to have a R value of 17. I'm not sure if thats a decent price or not. I'm going to try and get some more prices.

Bubble wrap is plenty of insulation for us in the south. Now that I built a bathroom in my shop il be staying the night up there when it cools off. My little getaway spot!

I'd just vent it real well and do away with the insulation.

I just bought 4'x125' (500sqft) single bubble foil insulation on Ebay for $80 shipped.

We put what the contractor called, Double Bubble, in the addition on our shop. It's got foil, mylar, something shiny covering on one side and white on the other. It's tough as nails.

I dont plan to ever close in the lean to's on each side. I'm just really wanting something there for condensation. What do yall recommend? I'm trying to save as much money as possible but at the same time I don't want to skimp.

Tyvek to the purlins with plywood over the tyvek.

Might wanna furr out the plywood if the purlins are running perpendicular to the slope

The non perforated bubble foil is a vapor barrier, that should suit for condensation.

That's what I'm thinking too, BowtechDan. To me, a pole barn, by definition, isn't insulated or even have walls. And even if it did, I'm not sure what would need insulating.
We have one barn that doesn't have sides and it never gets dew or condensation.

Thanks to everyone that are providing me with their suggestions. That's what I am looking for.

As for the last 2 comments, if you read my initial post you will see that I am starting out with a pole barn and then I will enclose part of it.

Unless you are planning on adding an Hvac unit, or heater there is no need to insulate.

Sweating or condensation is caused by a material that is cooler than the air around it. Therefore If it's hot inside and hot outside there is no "sweating".

Closing it in has nothing to do with that.

My pole barn will have moisture on the bottom of the tin and drip on everything at certain times of the year. I think that is what he is talking about.

Ok, but insulating without an artificial temp change won't make any difference. I'm just picturing soggy insulation that serves no purpose.
