Hello all, I bought my first farm, and am planting this year for the first time. I have read & heard varying opinions on planting. To be specific, when to plant the fertilizer. I have bush hogged, and sprayed herbicide exactly 1 week ago (9/13). My local feed/seed store recommended that when I disc for the first time, to go ahead and spread the fertilizer & disc it in. Then plant when I want, according to rain, etc.

I went back into the feed/seed store today as I was missing a part for my spreader. I was asking someone different today the same question. He recommended to wait maybe another week, give the herbicide about 2 weeks to do its thing, then wait for rain or whatever then plant. THEN, when the plants come up and are maybe 6" to 12" tall, THEN SPREAD fertilizer.

Thoughts?

I am no expert but I stay off my fields after they have been seeded and started to sprout.

How big are the plots? I'd fertilize when you plant. If your plots are small enough, I'd then come back at some point with a hand spreader and give it another little boost with fertilizer. I'd certainly focus my efforts on fertilizing at planting in case you don't get the chance to supplement later on.

My plots (2) are small. One is about 1/4 - 1/3 acre, the other is about 1 1/2 acres. I also live on the property, so access, timing, whatever, is not a problem.

Congrats on the farm! You're going to have a lot of fun!

I typically add 0-0-60 to our plots when planting and then hit them with nitrogen (oats, wheat, turnips, etc) once they get up and just before a rain. Our plots require no phosphorous...

Joe4majors...Thanks! We love it. It is a small farm, only 30 acres, in Montgomery Co. (Mathews). Have REALLY good deer on trail cams at night....I have a son in law that has never killed a deer, so I am hoping for a good year...

Our place is not close by so we have to economize. We spread seeds, fertilizer and lime all on the same day. Might not be 'right' but it all gets done and the results have been good for us.

I have always planted the end of September first of October. I bust up the ground good in first to mid sept. I fertilize and seed at the same time then drag to cover. A little will come up quick. If you have a little rain it will bloom. A little ammonia nitrate about Christmas will sweetin things up a bit for Jan. I have always had great plots with plenty of deer coming to them in South Alabama. Good luck!

I don't disk, so i don't spread my fertilizer with my seed, i wait until it is about 2-3" high and spread ahead of a rain event.

I disc my fields all at one time,I have 10 plot,s I plant. After I get them all disc then I put out my seeds,I plant a variety of mixes so I write down what I plant in each feild. Some mixes like wms deer magnet have a lot of clover seeds in it so you have to drag a peice of old fence not to get the seed to deep.but I fertilize all my fields before dragging or discing.another seed I plant is rackmaster it has bigger seeds in it so I lightly disk it in. But like everyone else I go back over them with sodium nitrate.then they are good to go.hope
Everyone has a great season and be safe.
