I don't know if they have any wire haired right now, but we bought our short hair from Atchley's Doxies in Skyline close to Scottsboro. He's been a great little dog. I know they have a website that list the current and upcoming litters.

http://www.atchleysdoxies.com/

Doesn't look like there are any wire haired pups expected, sorry.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Send loprofile a PM....Also look on the dog tracking list at the top of the dog forum and give Tom & Jackie Munoz a call. If they aren't having anymore litters then they can likely put you in contact with someone.

Best game tracking dog there is. Others do OK but the wire-haired dachshund will not loose interest. Their coat protects them from briars and being low to the ground enables them to maneuver under the brush. Our next dog will be a wire-haired. Search online I thought I saw some breeders in Georgia or Tennessee.

IMO…There’s no one best dog out there. There are different niches when it comes to tracking and some dogs fill a niche must better than others. As an example, stick a wire haired on a leg shot deer and ask it to bay it up and see how well it performs. Now don’t get me wrong, they are great dogs and very popular….it’s just that there are A LOT of scenarios you face when tracking and different dogs do better in different situations.

Another plus for a dachshund is that their legs are built so they don't run off and leave too many people behind. smile

There’s a lot of good tracking dogs out there. One of the big considerations is picking a dog that fits well for you outside of tracking. I think this is one of the reasons the wire haired are so popular. It’s a small dog that doubles as a house companion well for folks. A lot of people like to run these UBT events as well and a lot of your score is based off of how clean your dog runs on the line. A small dog like that is about precision…..scores well. I think another reason they are so popular is because John Jeanenney has had such a huge impact on tracking. I mean that in a positive way….but the point is that a lot of folks have likely gotten them because that’s what he uses. He tracks in New York and has to be on lead all the time.

There are a lot of good tracking dogs out there that can do the same thing a wire haired can do….smell an old track….concentrate…..puzzle solve…etc….Another one of the better known trackers in the nation is Roy Hindes. He tracks off lead in Texas. He uses a much, much larger hound breed of dog. A larger dog like this can cover ground fast and use its nose in the air and on the ground. It may not run a high scoring run on a field test because it doesn’t always hunt with his nose glued to the line on the ground. He may cross an open field by just bumping back and forth across the line as he goes. He’s hunting the deer as well as hunting the blood line. He may cross that field in a matter of seconds where as the wire haired would slowly pick its way. It’s all a matter of preference and situation.

There’s lots of very capable dogs. The right lab seems hard to beat. Several folks having good success with Blue Lacys, Curs, and Catahoulas. For tracking here in the south IMO you are better off with a larger dog in the 35-60 lb range. The understories like what you would find in one of these quail plantation settings or say the regrowth in a 3-4 year clear cut is better suited for a bigger dog. How they handle a snake bite is a consideration too because it’s a high likelihood. How the dog handles dealing with live deer is another consideration.

If you're going the longhaired route, I would look into the Teckel. The Teckel is a longhaired dachshund that is bred with an emphasis on hunting and tracking.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have always heard great things about Jagd terriers when it comes to tracking.

There was a guy with one of those at the national trackfest. It was a cool arse little dog and it really perked my interest in them after seeing that one. After reading about them more and taking into consideration what I saw with that one, I had a couple knocks on them.

One is that you sacrifice the cold nose of something like a hound. It has one of the better noses of the terriers but what I read said that it would take a special individual jagt (pronounced yack) to be able to track one after 20-24 hrs. The other knock was lack of focus to be able to follow a colder trail past hot lines. The dog at the show wanted to chase squirrels and dig in holes, etc…It didn’t care about the several hour old blood line. One of the really experienced handlers was actually working with the dog for the guy to see if he could get it focused on the blood line. A hot live animal is really what they are bred for. They’re bred to go down into holes with some critter, I think it was a badger or something of that nature. Now if you were gonna get a squirrel dog I think they would be cool as hell.

I’m just talking here so you can see what I’m talking about with different traits fitting different scenarios. It’s not to say any one breed can’t track or be a good tracker…..it’s just different considerations for what you want. Jagt’s are used a lot for tracking in other parts of the world. I gave it a lot of thought for my second dog but the lack of a truly cold nose is why I finally checked that one off the list.

Teckel is just the German name for a dachshund. It may be a specific type of doxie, but it is just a doxie.
