We've always called them mock orange. I have some posts on my property line fence that are at least 50 yrs old and still solid as a rock. Don't even think about trying to cut one that is aged with a chainsaw.
Around here if you see them you know it's black belt soil also known as prairie mud when it's wet, like concrete when it's dry

You got that right Ron! My daddy's buddy that was a farmer in Hope Hull would always say about farming prairie mud " if you stick with it in the summer it will stick with you in the winter."

You've got that right. It's like grease when it's wet. It's not even water soluble. You can't wash it off you have to scrub it or brush it off

Believe it or not, horses will eat them. Don't ask me why

If anyone wants to grow some let me know. We throw hundreds of the fruits away every summer getting them off the turf. And if you ain't got the limbs high enough you will look like you just got out of a cat fight.

They make for a nice knife handle.

When the wood is burned it has the hottest BTU of any wood in america. Do not use in a fireplace. We burn alot of it in the firepit in Sumter and you will back up with it gets going.

When dead and dry it is about as hard as concrete. Termites will not eat it. There are fence posts on our place that are well over 100 years old. The wire has long since rusted away but the fence post still remains.

They have some good thorns on them but there is another tree that I do not know the name of. I have only seen them in Sumter. They are not at my place in Pickens. They will ruin any tire that touches them. After patching and plugging tires I finally filled them all with foam. Every tractor, disk, bush hog, log splitter tire has foam.

Those thorns are about the size and hardness of old concrete nails.

The place in Missouri we hunt has them. The farmer has 2 gate post in front of his mothers home that were put there in 1908 and it still is used today but they cant drive staples in it so the wire has to be tied to it

When they get about rotten and soften up deer eat them also.

If the wood has a nice grain to it I bet that's a really good idea.

I hate them. A tire flattening tree...along with honey locust. Has a very shallow root system and is easily pushed over with even a small dozer. I push over every one I see. May be invasive but I have found them easy to control.
