I have always heard of the Osage Orange tree, but never the bodock tree. They are one in the same. I've never seen one till I moved to MS. They're everywhere over here. A strange land this Mississippi is grin

Any of y'all have them in Alabama?

Yep, they're here. Officially known as bois d'arc, but also called Osage orange, bodock, chainsaw smashers, trees from hell, $#**($#( and probably a few other colloquial names, too.

Couple of weeks ago in Illinois a guy with our group had one of the green seed balls and planned to take it home. Said he was told he could soak it until it broke up into a slurry, then pour the seeds into a trench to create a "fence" of trees.

I asked if he really wanted to do that since they're invasive. He didn't mind. His land, his chainsaws.

I hope he was a young man if he is hoping to see his new fence.

I don't think I have actually. Other than going down 43 to the beach.

Heck yes! They make great fence post. The lighting can't kill it and it will give a D10 all it wants.

They are common down here for livestock. They provide shade low to the ground plus the long stickers on the limbs the cattle use to scratch for biting flies. Skwerls is the only thing I've ever seen will eat the orange. The sap in the orange could be used as a high strength industrial epoxy.

Didn't know what it was until I clicked on the link Skinny posted. We used to throw those things at each other as kids, and hit the fruit with baseball bats. It was fun to make them explode. Guess we were spreading an invasive species...

Makes good fire wood also. Just don't try to split it with an ax.
It's like try to split a chunk of hard rubber. Even a razor sharp ax will just bounce off it.

The place I hunted in Kansas last year was covered up with them There was even a 'pole yard' where they brought in tractor trailer loads, just like we do pine and hardwood, and they cut/trimmed them into posts. Craziest log yard I ever saw.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Osage is the #1 wood for making selfbows. If any of you guys have any that can be got close to I would love to have some.

I would be happy to help the provider prepare staves and instruct him in how to build a selfbow.

www.primitivearcher.com has a bunch of tutorials on building Osage bows.

I will say that if you don't handle it properly as soon as it is cut it will be worthless for bows. PM me if anyone needs to know how to get it ready.
