just FYI, those have an expiration date from the manufacturer. I bought 3 last year and promptly returned them as they were only about 6 months from their expiration Yeah, I've seen that. It's got to be like anything, it doesn't really expire, they just want you to buy a new one.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

so what exactly "expires" on this thing??? I was wondering the same. Probably the tensile strength of the "wire" degrades over time.

so what exactly "expires" on this thing??? It doesn't "expire" any more than your harness does.

I think if you left it in the weather all the time (the expiration date) is how long you would expect one to last... But as long as you are keeping it inside after every use, you will be just fine...
I honestly think this is what the 5 years refers to. But I'd never let my life depend on anything that I left out like that anyway .

so what exactly "expires" on this thing??? It doesn't "expire" any more than your harness does. I was assuming something the expiration was something to do with the oil/internal gears, etc. Never tore one apart to find out. my point was that I bought something solely out an abundance of caution and it might have failed because it was too old.

Personally, I'd rather pull myself back in the stand, than be on the ground with a broke leg and my cell phone 30' above me Broke leg? What you talkin bout Willis?

If you are injured in some way, you don't have any of your gear handy. I'd rather be dangling with my belly button even with the bottom of the stand. Ex. Split your head open falling out, wire slips you down to the ground. Not a serious injury, but your keys and cell phone are in your pack up in the tree. You're by yourself, middle of nowhere, and have to scale the tree to be able to leave.
