Are you guys using the slug guns because it's a legal requirement? Well, yes and no. I hunt mostly on a military installation where it's slug or muzzleloader only. Been hunting there about 10 years now, so I've just evolved my slug guns into short range rifles. Lots of the land there is cutover, or big soaring hardwood ridges, or pines with sage underneath for hundreds of yards. The ol' Remington 1100 with a smooth barrel just won't cut it. But I've grown so comfortable and confident with my slug gun that I sometimes take it other places (where I can hunt with a rifle) just because it's fun.

I hunt sometimes with a Remington 12 gauge 870 26" barrel with extended rifled choke, topped with a red dot sight. 100% confidence out to 75 yards with standard slugs. Back when Remington still made Buckhammer slugs, 125 yards was no problem at all. That slug was made for rifled choke tibes and rifled barrels. I've yet to find another slug to replace the Buckhammer.

It's a slower speed, specifically made for choke tubes (seems like I read the Buckhammer was basically the same thing, a sabot with slow velocity).

Not sure but will check them out.
I can say that a 3" Buckhammer will rattle your teeth. Hated sighting in because without wearing gloves my saddle mount for the red dot sight would peel off skin near knuckle of trigger finger.
