I wrote this story several years ago. I don’t think I’ve ever shared it with you guys but since the heat of summer is just about to peak and we’re all itching for cooler days…..I thought it might be a good time for a huntin story….one that’s true.

If anyone knows the guy in the story, please let me know. I always thought his family would like to read it. They were from Madison Co back then but all of this has been 20+ years ago now. If you need to zoom in…just hold down your “Control” key and roll your mouse wheel forward. Rocket62…..check out the drag marks.

Was Ol' Man Harris from Huntsville area? I didn't know any Harris when I passed thru here '93-'95, but I do know a Harris family now. And the age is about right to be the father/gf of the guys I know.

Hollytree Hunting Club.....I don't know if the store is still there but if you were standing in the parking lot facing the store it would have been the mountain you could see if you were looking over the back right corner. "The Bottoms" as we called it, came all the way out the main road.

No, this was a different Virgil….but I remember Mr. Saint’s land. We used to have to drive through it to get back to the old cabin. One the biggest bucks we ever saw up there was standing on the dam of his pond. I think our old hunting club is part of the management area these days and you have to access it from the top. My deer in the pic was killed on the last bench before reaching to top.

Oh man, great story to start out my day with. My club this year is just north of Hollytree in Princeton and I'm wanting to bag my first racked buck too!

Is that you on the right, at 17 years old? Great Pic and Oh My at those drag marks. I see you've paid your dues ...

I'm wondering if this is Ol Man Harris? If so then I am related through marriage and I know his kids and grand kids and can pass the story on. This guy passed away in 2002 at the age of 73 and I believe he was away at a hunt camp when it happened.

Clicky pic ...

The store is still there. You would be talking about the western side of Jacobs Mountain looking up into Saltpeter cove. I'll post a pic of the store here in a minute as soon as I find it

There is a new store there ... the old store is still standing but closed.

Here is a pic of both :

Here's a closeup of the old store:

And a pic looking into Saltpeter Cove:

That hunting club was the source of all my earliest hunting memories from hunting fox squirrels down along the river with my grandmother….to killing my first rabbit …..to having my 9th birthday party there….to killing my first deer….and on and on. Many of my family members including granddad, uncles, brother…were all in that club for 20+ years starting in the 70’s…..Eventually the lady who owned the land passed away and when she did, we lost it. That was a sad day indeed.
