Did some scouting today and found a few real big and long powerlines. Would it be better to go in there with a weedwhacker and cut some some grasses that are too high or would it be better to leave it as is. I was also thinking about putting in a few micro clover plots. What do y'all think?

Definitely put in some plots. I love hunting a power line, never know what may pop out, and decide to cross. We have 2 at my club but there too close to the road. If we planted a plot we'd just be asking for trouble!

I had joined a club that had a house on some lines. I thought I was golden and sat in it on 3 or 4 occasions. I did not see a single deer.

I was told, trespassers spot lighted deer up and down the power lines. It made the deer avoid the power lines.

I wouldn't weed whack anything all that grass will be dead and gone by mid winter

Leased land for years that had one of those huge wide feeder power lines across it, thing was probably 200 yards wide and we had I'm guessing 2 miles of it. Seems like the utility company would come about every 4 or 5 years and bushhog it, would really screw it up for that season. It was very much like hunting a cutover when it was grown up, about thigh high sage with briars and bushes. We kept two fields planted on it, both the same width as the powerline and maybe that long too. It seemed like there was a deer in one/both of those fields literally 24/7, but we didn't kill many (if any?) bucks out of them. The bucks would cross the powerline like crazy, but avoided those fields.

I've always thought with this kind of growth on the big powerline ROWs, cutting some paths or patchwork through it with a Bush Hog would be a good idea. Nothing drastic but enough to create some little openings to see, walk thru to get a deer out easier, etc., and leave the majority of the growth there.

I love hunting powerlines. I have one on my property that I own, and it runs the whole length of my buddies property that I hunt with.

We see a lot of deer on it and we have 2 food plots on it.

I also hunt them in every club ive been in that had them. Gas lines as well. The bucks seem to like the low areas where drainage ditches cross the line, and where it is a little thicker.
I catch deer crossing the lines all day long...Ive had better luck with bucks AFTER 10 am actually. 11am-1pm is a great time to sit a line.

Also GREAT spot to kill a gobbler.

We always cut some lanes thru them and the deer would walk them rather than thru the thick stuff. We would cut them about this time of year to let them get good and used to them before season.
The low spots seemed to be the best crossings.

APCO told me its a 6 yr rotation on them coming thru and spraying/cutting. He said they are now mostly spot spraying rather than cutting and just spraying the trees coming up thru it, letting the low grow stuff to choke the other out.

Cutting lanes through them is way more important than a small patch. Whoever says don't cut lanes, doesn't know what they are talking about. Power lines aren't like hunting a clear cut, because the deer cross in a hurry. It's hard as hell to pick a deer out and judge it, before they get across a line with belly button high briars

One of my favorite stands is on a powerline. I've seen 20-30 deer in one sit. Went down last weekend and tried to coyote hunt. No luck there but right before dark I saw the buck I screwed the pooch on last year. He's gona be a stud this year. I'm going to plant a good bow plot on it this fall and hope for some good success

I have the ultimate powerline hunting spot on my property that I live on. It's a double power line, one is a double pole line and a single pole line that run parallel to each other.
My shooting house is on the highest point on the line overlooking a bottom with a small creek crossing it. I can see about 1 1/4 miles to the east. There's woods on both sides for about 3/4 mile then pasture. The 1st 1/4 mile is mine, next 1/2 mile is a neighbor and pasture is another neighbor.
I have an 1 1/2 acre green field on the line on my property and it's the only one on the power line and the field and powerline are not visible from the road.
When the line is grown up, I do some bush hogging before the season to improve the visibility. I can get in and out of the shooting house without the deer ever knowing I was there.
We only shoot wall hangers and most years we kill nothing but see on average see 20 plus deer every sit and I've hunted it regularly for 25 years. Build it and they will come but do it right and exercise trigger control.
Best spot I've ever hunted and I've been hunting for almost 60 years.
