Anybody have any experience with them? I'm contemplating getting one in the next year or so.

Mine is almost 11 years old. My buddy went blind 3 years ago but it was a completely random diagnosis that the veterinary optometrist said is not related to breed or genetics. They called it SARDS, Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, and the cause is unknown. There is also no known cure or treatment.

That being said, they are wonderful dogs. They are excellent hunters. Mine was intended to be a retriever in the dove field, which he was, but he proved to be an even better blood trailer on deer. I fully plan to get another one when this fellow passes on one day. The only thing I dislike about them is how much they shed. Other than that, they are exceptional dogs. They are extremely intelligent and loyal. They are known for being exceptionally friendly.

They are not really known for being protective but I'll share a story with you. My dog was diagnosed with his blindness just a few months before my son was born. Due to it's rapid progression, I'm not sure he could ever see my son. My son had some complications at birth that made therapy services necessary from a very early age. The therapist usually came to my mother-in-laws house to see my son but one day the therapist had to come to our house because of some work being done at the in-laws. My wife and I were both at work so it was just my MIL and son at home when the therapist arrived. Keep in mind that our dog had never met the therapist and he's completely blind at this point. The therapist comes in and spreads a blanket in the living room floor and proceeds to place my son who is only 9 or 10 months old on the blanket so they can start their therapy. The dog who is completely blind proceeds to hop off the couch and make his way to the blanket on the floor. He wedges himself between my son and the therapist. The therapist is a dog lover so she didn't think anything about it. It was only when she reached over the dog to pick up my son that the dog growled loudly at her. This dog has never growled at a soul. I can only theorize that he was making an effort to protect my son because my wife and I were not home. My MIL was able to get the dog into another room and no harm was done. I think it offers some interesting insight into the instincts of a dog, even if he is blind.

Good gun dog. Great with kids. Protective of house and kid. Does shed, but so do I.
Will get another one when she's gone.

This girl left a pretty broad path of destruction for the first 6 months or so, but she's turning out to be an excellent dog

Beautiful dog,Brent. We love our Boykin. He's the best dog I've ever had and he's smart as a whip.

This story sounds very familiar to me. My parents have 2 boykins, one is about 11 and the other around 9. Well the 9yr old has always been a bit of a hardass so to speak. (hes whipped up on some dogs, my oldest brittany 2 times, and he tried to get after my youngest, but hes a tough sob and held his own, and has bitten a few people that have made sudden movements towards family members) any ways i guess its been over the last couple of years that we could all tell there just wasnt something right with his eyes. My folks took him to the vet, and it turns out that he has been blind for nearly his whole life (explains the protectiveness hes always had). My parents have really enjoyed them, and speak very highly of the breed.

whack n stack, I am on Rick @ Shadow Bend's list for his breeding that will take place around the first of July. I got with him back a couple months back and we talked for a long time. He was very helpful, friendly and loves his dogs. I researched Boykins for hours(my wife was about ready to leave me bc I was spending so much time looking) and Rick was the first of the breeders that I emailed whose pups come with all health clearances that actually emailed me back. I am really looking forward to getting a pup from him if everything pans out once the breeding takes place.

I've got an 8 year old and he hasn't shed since we started getting him shaved. Dries off quicker at pool or lake also

I talked to him Sunday, and decided I'm going to wait until his next litter, I don't think I would have the time for a puppy in October. He sounded like the guy I want to get one from. Real nice fella.

Heard great things about Boykins; another Spaniel to consider is a Field Bred English Cocker. Really enjoy mine; but be prepared for a LOT on energy. I can recommend a good kennel in Albany; this is Abbey.

We just bought a puppy off a GRHRCH/MH/MHR/UH from Kim Smith in TN. His sire is owned by Butch Herb. His sire is only the third Boykin to achieve the GRHRCH title. He is one of only 7 to receive the MH title. He is the only Boykin in history to win the open both times in the same year. His dam is very well bred with Mule being her grandfather. This is the first Boykin we have ever owned and we are loving him.

I got her from Able's elite boykins in Huntsville. Drew is a good fellow and I believe he's also an aldeer member

Have watched both the sire and the dam work and they are the real deal. Sticking with Labs for now grin Good luck with the puppy!

I know everyone has their favorite breed of dog... That said, I have owned 2 Boykin Spaniels since 2003. They are the finest Famiky hunting breed that I have ever been around, their "want to" to please and not disappoint as well as loyalty and love shown to family members is truly incredible.

My current Boykin will have her first litter in the next 12 months... All clearances obtained for Boykin Spaniel Society sign off and litter approval. Just my 2 cents

Had 3 of them before I switched to English Cockers. Great dogs. I'd get another, if I hadn't decided I like the Cockers even more.

I finally was about to pick up my pup Saturday. Long story short Rick @ Shadow Bend had some issues with his breeding and wasn't sure if the AI's and natural breeding were going to take and he know I wanted a pup so he put me on his friend Skip Nelson @ Madison Boykins in Madison, Ms. She is 7 weeks old and a beautiful dog. I am enjoying everything about her so far except for the crate training process. I have her crate blocked off so she can only use a small area and I have a blanket along with a couple toys of her in there. I feed her in there and she will own her own tour the kennel throughout the day and evening but when it comes to bed time that is a total different ball game. Night one she fell asleep quickly with only 5-7min of whining and slept for 3.5hrs then after a bathroom trip whined for about 30min before falling back asleep for another 1.5hrs then up again for about 20min and finally she fell asleep again and slept til 5:15am and at that point I was willing to get up for good. Last night she would not fall asleep after 75min of whining almost non stop I was able to get on the floor with her, get her to fall asleep then returned her to her kennel where she slept for 3.5-4hrs, bathroom break, 20min whining and finally fell back asleep until 5am on the dot. I am ready to get this crate training process knocked out.
