Just depends on what your goals are and what you are trying to accomplish. It's easy to grow and makes a pretty field. I like it as a cover crop but wouldn't plant it just for nutrition to deer. Our deer browsed it but never really wore it out like I've heard happen in other areas...and our density is pretty high. I like it as a buffer around bigger fields or used in a duck hole. Not a big fan of it for doves as there is too much "stalk" and our ground was not very clean where we mowed it down. There are better alternatives for doves than milo. We don't have turkeys so can't speak for that. All in all, it's a good crop for diversity but not really the best at anything in my opinion. Was gonna plant it for deer. We usually plant sunflowers for our dove and may plant a little bit for ducks. We are mainly ag, but just wanted a little bit of diversity for the deer this fall. We have foodplots big enough we can plant the outter edges in several rows of milo and leave the insides green. I have heard good things about it and also heard it wasn't touched.

If I were going to plant something for deer, I would go with peas, beans, or lablab. That's my experience. I've planted it twice, kind of as a "helper" crop mainly to support peas, beans, etc. in a summer plot. The deer leave it alone all summer, allowing the other stuff to grown up in it, around it, etc. Then, when seeds turn reddish in the fall, they will eat it. Your mileage may vary. I've planted it alone and with peas and sunflowers. In some places it's the only thing that will survive the deer pressure. It's inexpensive and pretty drought tolerant. My deer will eat every seed head and I've even left it standing and broadcast cereal grains into the standing stalks and that did well and provided cover for the deer. When planted with iron and clay peas, the peas will run up the milo stalks. I mix 7 lbs/acre of milo with the peas and that works for me and you have something for the deer to eat after the peas are gone in the fall. I priced milo the other day and it is $22 for 50 lbs.
