Anyone ever been diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency? I've been sick a lot this winter and last year and the year before. I went to see a nurse practitioner with my last sore throat instead of driving to B'ham to see my regular doctor.

Anyway, I was complaining about being sick so often and asked her to try and figure out what was wrong with my immune system and fix it. She did a bunch of blood work and I got called to come back in, so I met with her today and she is pretty certain that she has found my problem.

My vitamin D level is 11. Normal is 50-100 if I'm remembering right. The closer to 100 the better. I don't remember what unit of measure that is, but that really doesn't matter. Anyway it's not as simple as taking a pill, since D is a fat soluble vitamin most pill forms of Vit D are not adequate.

I get a whole lot of sunshine....

Just wondering if anyone has been diagnosed with this?

You can take Vitamin K2 with Vitamin D to increase absorption. If you get lots of sun, but your skin is covered, you aren't really getting much. Now you have an excuse to nude sunbathe in the yard. Fatty fish and egg yolks are high in D, and taste yummy.

I have had a rough go the last few years also, especially being exposed to every germ there is at work. I have started drinking two ounces of Grape Wine each night before going to bed. I have not even had a cold this year since. I started this to try and improve my health and I really believe it is working.

If you try it, just use the grape wine. If you "feel" it after drinking it back off on the amount you are drinking a little. I hope this continues to increase my health. I feel so much better now that I have started doing this each night.

Me too. Just got my labs back last week. My # was 12. I've been sick with colds and congestion for 2 years all the time and fatigued. Thought it was junk from all the little foster kids and stress of having 4 ages 5 & under.

Could be a combination. Told me to start on 5000 IUs daily of a D3 gel cap form.

What is the deal with fat soluble and some pills not adequate? I haven't researced anything yet.

If you're truly interested in what vitamin D actually does for you, I suggest reading; The Vitamin D Solution, by Dr. Michael F Holick. Turns out that synthesized vitamin D is actually a secosteriod (25(OH)2D3)and plays a large role in your immune system.

My wife was quick to catch a cold and it took awhile for her to get over it, she takes meds daily. She's been doing better. I like to joke with her and ask if she needs another dose of vitamin "D" wink

Mine was low and I have been on 4 to 6000 of d3 for a couple years. Seems to have helped with colds and such. May also protect against skin cancer. It is not passed in your urine like some vitamins so it can build up in your body and become toxic in large doses but that seems to be rare and if the doc is checking your levels a couple times a year it shouldn't be a problem.

She said to not go to (Insert favorite chain store or pharmacy) and buy a Vit D supplement. She said they would do little to no good. I don't remember exactly what she said so that was my paraphrase.

She is supposed to text me a picture tonight of the bottle of stuff that she takes. She said she started taking this supplement 3 years ago and it changed her life. She said she stayed sick on and off all year before taking it. She also talked at length about essential oils and how she uses them. I will let you know what she uses. She said it was a white colored oil.

The LNP told me the same thing today. She didn't recommend the book, but told me the rest of that. smile

When I was a kid all Vit D did was help your teeth and bones. Seems it does a whole lot more than that.

Myself, and my wifes best friend also, were diagnosed with Vit D deficiency. NP told me that it is unusually common in the Sand Mountain area. Maybe this is a case for Erin Brockovich. LOL

Yep a few years back; my doctor prescribed a Vit D supplement. After my numbers went up he told me to stay on it with over the counter Vit D capsules. Fewer colds, sinus infections etc. since my level went up.

I tried to tell y'all about essential oils a while back, nobody would listen. Them folks in the herbal store kinda sound like a bunch of hippies but they have some valid points. They told me God provided everything man needed on this earth. Also said big pharma companies ain't trying to heal you there trying to drain your bank account. Sounds logical. I'm interested to hear the info she gives you

After fixing my shoulder with bee stings, I have started listening to more natural remedies. I definitely agree that God provided all that we needed.

Get your vitamins from the food you eat, not a pill

That's good advice much of the time but I really don't want to eat 12 egg yolks a day...

I got diagnosed with depleted vitamin D levels as well. Doc put me on OTC vitamins and in the 3 weeks I've been taking them I can tell a difference in my energy levels and overall mood.

We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

Your body produces Vitamin D primarily through exposure to UVB sunlight. That source is free. However, there are two things that limit that source. One is use of sunscreen and the other is lack of exposure during the winter months (when you need it most). The practice of staying out of the sun to avoid developing skin cancer may be the single biggest reason you are low. The experts say that it only takes 15-20 minutes of exposure (bare shoulders and back) a day, at the right time of day to provide enough for your body. MORE SUN IS NOT BETTER. Dark pigmented people produce less vitamin D as well as older folks.
