So I've had some intermittent toilet problems over the past few years. We are trying to sell the house so I figured I would finally fix it. The toilet in our bedroom fills up when you try to flush it. But this only happens when it rains. When the outside drys out it flushes OK, not the best but does the job. So here are the things I've tried.
I pumped the septic tank. (noticed some ground water running back into the tank)
Snaked the toilet, removed the toilet and snaked the drain, went on top of the roof and snaked the vent.... no clogs that I could tell.
When the toilet was removed I ran water down the drain for a good 10 mins and it never backed up. All the other toilets, sinks, showers all drain fine. I'm hesitant to say its a clog because it only backsup when it rains and I'm hesitant to say my septic is filling up with rain water because the other drains and toilets work fine. So, I'm stumped any ideas?

My first thought was a venting issue but you ran that from the roof.. Toilets do go bad, a new toilet may be your best option
You can take a coat hanger and clean all the little jets under the lip of the bowl, that may help.

When you flush it and it starts to fill up, pour a pitcher full of water in it aiming for the hole in the bottom. If it flushes, you need a new toilet

One thing to check. Sometimes there is a low spot in a vent line that could collect rain water from the roof vent. Its a long shot but sounds like a vent line issue to me.

Good deal. I will certainly try it when I get home. I more and more suspect it maybe the old toilet.

Is your bedroom on the lowest floor and other drains above it? I'm just wondering if it's an issue that's really caused by rain or if it's pure coincidence.
Do you have any trees near your septic tank? I had some dogwoods near mine and the roots grew into the tank and acted as a screen where the drain line met the tank. I only noticed poor drainage in the downstairs bathroom. Everything upstairs had to fill up lots of drain pipe before the problem would have been noticed on the upper floor. The downstairs bathroom was closest to the drain so that's why it would back up first and the others did not. If you suspect this could be an issue, you can buy root killer at any Lowes or Home Depot. I pour a bottle down my drains every 6 months now.

No, its all one story and no trees near the tank or lines just a few bushes.

Hm.. you know I'm not sure. Only looked in it when it was being pumped from the main port cover. Tank and system is about 25yr old. Might have to do some digging this weekend.

I believe you got field line problems on the other side of septic tank.

If that toilet is the last fixture before the main line exits the house, that could indicate a tank/field line issue... Look for wet spots in the yard and around edge of tank. Usually if there are issues with the line and what's beyond it, as the toilet starts to back up you get a gurgling or bubbling in tub/shower drain and possibly the lavatory. Is your washing machine tied into the tank or is it on its own field line? If so, pump it out and watch that toilet to see if water level rises or maybe even flush it as the washer spins.

I'd take the 2 lids off and look, if the first tank is full of water and the second one isnt, try pulling the filter off and spraying it clean. Usually, not always) if that is the problem there will be wet spots around the lid.
Kinda sounds like an old toilet to me, cant never tell, just a process of elimination

Well... prob solved. Turns out it was the field lines that was flooding the tank. Since the ground slopes down toward the tank, it was new pump, basin, and field lines. $5000 later I have a Cadillac of a crapper tank... Aint that chitty.

Whomever installed that first time around should have their arse kicked and be sued.

We've been in the house 5 years and just kinda lived with it since it only happens when it rains.... Think I waited too long to sue the original owner/real estate agent for selling me the house without disclosing the issue?
