Sunn hemp produces a lot of biomass and will grow in just about anything. If you can get it established and mix in some beans or whatever in, it should bring some nutrition to the deer and provide good organics to the soil. Awesome I'd have never even thought of that. When should it be planted in general?

When should it be planted in general? When temps are consistently in the high 70's-80's, and no chance of freezing. I would spray and now like last week of March or first week of April, then plant one or two weeks later.

I have had some luck with buckwheat, sunn hemp, and quail haven soy beans on smaller plots. The quail haven or cowpeas or lab lab are vine plants that run and seem to avoid being completely browsed out like a traditional bushy plant. The SH and buckwheat provide some pressure relief for the QH soy beans or cowpeas or lab lab whichever you choose. I also like to add about 50 to 100 lbs of milorganite at planting and about 2 weeks later another 50 lbs. I have seen this establish and hold on moderate density on 3/4- 1 acre plots. I learned though to only use about 10 lbs of buckwheat per acre because I had it completely choke out my legumes, especially after the first crop reseeded.

That should say somewhere in there I either use Quail Haven, iron clay cowpeas, or lab lab.

For this part of the world, hard to beat a good mix of soy beans and cow peas (iron-and-clay peas) for summer food plots. Beware of planting lab-lab, not that it isn't an excellent protein source plant, but the deer might not use it as much as you would think. Planted several acres of it a few years ago, and they were the most beautiful plots I had ever grown, looked like waist-high kudzu. Unfortunately, could hardly find any sign that the deer were using it. Reason unknown. Have been reading a lot on here about sun hemp also. Gonna try some of that this year, but only a small plot at first, to see how the deer like it.
Best thing to do would be to try several different options in several different plots, then gauge how well it grows, as well as how much the deer use each planting. Then in future years you can switch over to the ones that grow the best and that the deer use the most in your location.
BTW, all these plants (beans, peas, lab-lab, sun hemp) are legumes, meaning they need little or no Nitrogen fertilizer, and the first planting will require you to mix the seed with innoculant prior to planting. For a soy bean, cow pea mix, I always fertilize with 50lbs 13-13-13 and 150 lbs of 0-20-20 per acre, but you will need to do a soil test to determine the exact amount needed for your plots.

i noticed you mentioned putting acorn rage on mineral site. Personally I wouldnt. The only time I ever used it, it turned into black mold. Doesnt do well with warm humid weather. Iron and clay cow peas (cow peas) is the the best thing I've found to plant that deer like. Only problem is, if thats all you plant. Once the deer find it, they'll stay with it till its gone. I've had them bed in it too. The sun hemp goes good with the peas. There's so much for them to eat in the summer that planting spring plots may not be super beneficial instead focus on growing and ferelizing native grass and weeds in order to build up om and improve topsoil.
